My ferret broke a nail. Is it safe to clip or should I wait?

Clip the nail carefully. If there is bleeding, gentle pressure and some Quik Stop powder or plain cornstarch should stop it. Clean daily with a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution. A dab of a triple antibiotic may be applied if necessary. Monitor for redness, swelling or lethargy. If she won't allow you to clip the nail, she may need to be seen by your veterinarian. Clip the other nails a bit to prevent snagging.

This could be due to trauma or infection. Monitor it as it grows. Keep it short to prevent snagging. See your veterinarian if the toe/foot becomes painful, has swelling or if you see bleeding or discharge.

That one will likely need to be clipped past the split to alleviate the pressure and pain. Because doing that can be painful and typically requires a bandage for the bleeding, your vet needs to do it so they can use sedation to control the pain! If it is not bleeding you can wait until the morning for your vet to open

I think as long as you schedule a visit on Monday Bertie should be okay. I'd recommend getting a E-collar to prevent Bertie from licking the nail as this may result in infection. You can also soak the foot in a diluted chlorohexidine or diluted iodine solution and then rinse thoroughly. If Bertie stops eating, acts lethargic, starts limping, or is obsessively trying to lick the nail then it would be better to get him to a veterinarian sooner. If he remains otherwise normal I think you are okay in waiting until Monday. Torn nails can be pretty painful, but please remember there are no safe over the counter pain medications for dogs so you will need a prescription from a vet for pain meds. Yes it does hurt. i would strongly recommend having her nail clipped by a vet at least the first time so you can see how it is done. if the nail keeps bleeding badly you can soak it with pressure in flour or ground coffee. please do not try this again without having a professional showing you how to do it properly.

Yes, it is best to wait and not clean it. Not only could it be painful for her but removing the scab/blood clot, etc could cause it to bleed again. I would wait at least a week to clean it but honestly, she will probably clean it herself when she is ready.

Hello. Ouch! Morty did break the nail at the quick. Honestly, it would be best to take Morty to your vet & just clip the nail off. It will hurt for a second, but leaving the nail like this will cause constant pain, & may lead to an infection up the nail bed.
