Female rabbit mounting & phantom pregnancy: Should I spay them?

This unfortunately happens sometimes where their bond is broken around the time they reach sexual maturity. It is wise to keep them seperated, because the mounting seems like aggressive behavior. However, I would have a vet double-check the sex of these two. I have seen many rabbits that were mistakenly identified as females, when they were actually males. This would also explain the mating behavior. You should also consider having them spayed/neutered at this age. I prefer to do this surgery around this age and it's quite safe when in an experienced surgeons hands. They will often cease the aggressive/mounting behavior after this procedure is done; and it saves from having a litter of unwanted bunnies...which is a big problem. While it is possible that Binky is pregnant, it is unlikely if she was not receptive to the male. However, she may be receptive soon, so I do recommend separating them to avoid unwanted pregnancy. You can neuter (castrate) the male at any time as well as the female. I hope this helps!

Thanks for reaching out about Bun Bun. This question has been addressed once before but there recommendation is to have Bun Bun spayed, and Fluffy neutered also (if not). Intact female spays have an increased incidence of uterine cancer but also tend to fight more. Talk to a veterinarian in your locale. Good luck.

There is no way to know if spaying will help to change her behvavior or not. There is no guarantee but it probably will help somewhat. Rabbits are very territorial so once that behavior is ingrained in them it is hard to correct it even with surgery. When they are spayed younger, the surgery has a better chance of working to change unwanted behaviors. It is recommended to spay around 4-6 months. It is recommended for pet rabbits to be spayed because of the very high risk of uterine cancer in this species - around 50% of intact female rabbits are estimated to get uterine cancer, which is a huge number. It's true that wild rabbits don't have surgery to be spayed, but they also have many more health problems and shorter lifespans than pet rabbits :) The cost to spay a rabbit will vary depending on what part of the country you live in and which specific clinic you use, so I would recommend calling around to some local vets who do this surgery to ask about costs.

I am sorry you are having trouble with Lily. I would recommend getting her spayed with a vet who has experience. I have spayed a lot of rabbits and never had a problem however they do have a higher risk of anesthesia due to being rabbits. I also would try to work on training with Lily, This will help stimulate her and exercise her which will hopefully decrease her wanting to destroy things in the house. I hope that helps

Mounting behavior is not unusual but I would recommend to have both rabbits checked out to be sure they are both males! You definitely don't want a bunch of baby rabbits! Male rabbits can sometimes become aggressive so neutering them is a good option to decrease aggression. You can discuss the surgery with the doctor during the visit to see if this is a good option for you.
