When is a female rabbit ready to breed and how can I tell?

How do you know when a bunny is in heat both female and male, and whats a proper wat to let them reproduce since they live w/ 6 other bunmies

Unlike cats and dogs, rabbits do not "go into heat" or have estrus cycles. When a female rabbit (doe) is mated by a male rabbit (buck), she will ovulate, or release eggs. Does reach sexual maturity at 6-8 months. Larger breeds may mature later. Bucks are mature at 6 months. Again, larger breeds will mature later. If a doe is not ready to mate, she will squeal, run or fight with interested bucks. When ready, she will be very receptive to any advance by an interested buck.
You can keep up to 10 does with one buck. He can mate daily but that is not recommended, so the most he should be bred is 2-3 times per week. You will need to separate him out from the does once his job is complete. Gestation is about 1 month.

Determine the age of the rabbit and its breed. According to the Merck Veterinary Manual, the sexual maturity of rabbits depends on the size of their breed. Small rabbits, such as the Polish Dwarf, mature at three-and-a-half months to four months old. Medium rabbits take four-and-a-half months to mature, and giant breeds mature at six to nine months of age. Younger rabbits are not suitable for breeding.

Pick up the doe with one hand on its scruff and the other hand holding up its bottom.

Look at its genitals, specifically the vaginal opening. The color of the opening varies with the rabbit's cycle. If the vagina is a pale, white-pink color, then the buck will have to wait for another day. If the vaginal orifice is a redder color, then the doe is receptive to mating. At the reddest point, the doe is most receptive to the buck.

Inspect the vaginal opening for signs of moisture. A dry opening with little or no moisture is a sign that the doe will not be interested in breeding. This usually happens at the same time as the lighter coloring of the vagina. A moist vagina, on the other hand, indicates fertility and receptiveness.

Place the doe in an enclosure with the buck, and watch to see if the doe accepts the buck's advances.

Thanks for reaching out about Donya. Some does might not reach sexual maturity until 6 months of age. But there could also be something wrong with either the male or the female resulting in infertility of either. Just because the male breeds, does not mean he is fertile. Determination at this point would require a veterinary visit and likely diagnostic testing. The palpable masses in the abdomen could be babies but also fecal material. Good luck.

Males can mate after 6 months of age. Females can be bred, ideally, after 2 years of age. Separating them during this upcoming heat cycle would be recommended if you are not prepared to breed dogs and have a litter of puppies. Can my female rabbit take a birth control pill or shot safely?

Instead of giving birth control which can cause uterine problems and possibly even cancer in the doe, it would be much better to have the male rabbit castrated. Male rabbits also tend to get aggressive and pee at people, and castration can make this behavior stop. You can also have your doe spayed. Either way you will not have any unwanted pregnancies this way.

Why are my young rabbits jumping and piling on each other? Is it normal?

If the rabbits are unfamiliar with one another, the larger ones are very likely to try and dominate the smaller ones. Yes, there may be some sexual dominance taking place but I assure you if the ages you stated are correct they are not capable of breeding yet. If they are small breed rabbits, they usually are not capable of breeding until at least months, with larger breed rabbits closer to 7-8 months. If you are noting any aggression, I would remove the older ones from the younger ones as to avoid any injuries or deaths from occurring. I know, rabbit fighting sounds a little ridiculous, but I have seen rabbit injuries from fights. They usually aren't deadly or anything, but can require veterinary care.
