Is my female hamster pregnant? Swollen belly, restless, drinking.

My female hamster (Minie) was sharing a cage with my male hamster (Fluffy) for about 2 weeks. She looks a bit swollen up around her belly. She is drinking a lot of water and she seems very restless. How can I be sure that she is pregnant? Also, if she is, what should I feed her to make sure she stays fit? I have separated the male as they were fighting a lot. I also try and keep her cage very clean. What else should I do to make sure she stays comfortable and healthy?

Thanks for reaching out about Esther and including photos. She does appear large. Keep her quiet and warm, do not disturb her. Don't change her diet now. Wait until she is less stressed.

With these pictures, I would guess she is pregnant. Gestation for a hamster is 15-18 days. On the third photo, it appears as if her mammary glands are developed. Usually hamsters start building a nest site in a corner. I would definitely separate her from the male as they can be aggressive during birthing. It is important to allow the female to have a quiet, minimally disturbed environment, especially during their first litter, to decrease the chance of rejection of babies by the mother.

Why is my hamster's belly suddenly big and she's gaining weight?

Thanks for reaching out about Margo and including pictures. The distention of the abdominal cavity is not a normal process. Abdominal size increases can be caused by fluid build up called ascites (liver, renal, heart diseases) or an organ enlargement. Kidney enlargement due to polycystic renal disease or cancer is not unusual in hamsters. A veterinary visit is recommended for diagnosis and treatment, quality of life can be improved. Good luck.

Female hamsters can also have reproductive problems (uterine neoplasia, pyometras and more. Urinary problems can also cause similar clinical signs. Your local veterinarian should be contacted again, as diagnostic tests might need to be performed to achieve a diagnosis. Try not to give mineral oil or yogurt again, as this can cause serious gastrointestinal upset. Good luck.

My hamster is bloated and lethargic. Should I take her to the vet?

Thanks for reaching out about Lucy and including photos. If she is lethargic and bloated she probably still needs to see a veterinarian to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Thanks for reaching out about Auggie. With intermittent blood in the urine and a swollen abdomen, uterine enlargement, (probably cancer) is likely. Hamsters are induced ovulators and are constantly in heat, therefore estrogen. High sustained levels of estrogen can lead to uterine neoplasia. A veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Most likely, she needs to be spayed. If not going forward with that, palliative medications for pain are recommended. Good luck.

Why is my hamster's tummy swollen, hard, and she can't clean herself?

It sounds like either a bloat or an internal tumor, in both cases it's very bad news for her as 'hamsters usually do not recover from these conditions. you need to take her to the vet in order to have it checked ASAP.
