My dwarf hamster has a sticky eye and seems sniffly. What can I do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Female | 1 year and 4 months old

I’ve had a Russian dwarf hamster for 1 year and 4 months. Over the last few days we’ve noticed him have a slightly sticky eye after he wakes up. It gradually gets better on its own and we’ve been gently wiping it daily with warm water which helps it to open up completely. There’s no puss or discharge. He’s been slightly sniffly and we’re wondering if he’s caught a cold. He still loves food and is drinking normally. Cage disinfected and bedding changed. Is there anything else we can do to help?

I would try this antimicrobial eye gel.

I don't know what bedding you are using but you want to use something that has very low dust like Care Fresh. I would start with these two things and if no improvement then you should try to get him to a vet for an exam.

Hope this helps. Best wishes.
