My hamster has a red crusty eye and is shaking. Is it serious?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Hamster | Female | unspayed

I just asked this but I guess my picture didn’t post. My hamster has a red crust around her eye. It just showed up today. Is this something that she’ll just recover from on her own or could it be a serious illness? She also keeps shaking kinda like a wet dog.

The eye does look a bit irritated. You can clean the spot with a washcloth to help keep the eye open and clear, and to allow you to inspect it for any wounds or additional irritation. If it doesn't clear up on its own after a day or so, seems to worsen, or the crusting continues or worsens, it would be best to have it examined by a vet in person to rule out any injuries or infections in the eye that could be causing it.
