Why is there blood in my dwarf hamster cage? Are they fighting?

thanks for reaching out about Coco and including a photo. this is likely bite wounds from aggression. As one is running away, they get bit on the rump. The two hamsters should be separated. Coco should probably see seen by a veterinarian as antibiotics might help the wounds heal more rapidly. Good luck.

Poor Luna. I would recommend separating them until Luna's back has healed if you find them often picking on each other or starting to become aggressive they might need separated more long term. Sometimes as they get older they can become more territorial or aggressive. If the wound is bleeding a lot Luna might need to visit the vet to for medications like pain control. Hope that helps

I am not sure if hazel is alone in the cage or if she is with another hamster is with her. If two hamsters are together I am concerned about a fight and would recommend separating them. However if she is alone I would look through the cage for any sign of trauma or sharp edges. Also if she has itchy skin or bad teeth she could be scratching herself. I would recommend taking her to a veterinarian to have the Lunda looked at and get more insight Hope she feels better soon.

Unfortunately yes, it can be very common for hamsters that are housed together to start fighting. This can occur even if the hamsters have always been together. I would recommend keeping them separated for a couple days and then trying to re-introduce them again like you did last night. Hopefully they will be able to get along with each other in the long run. If not, to keep them safe, you'll have to keep them separated. I hope this helps. There are certain hamsters that will tolerate one another, but in general, they are solitary. The safest option would be to have two cages for the hamsters. This would be especially important in case there is a male and a female or two males. I hope that this gives you a place to start!

Thank you for your question. Unfortunately if the hamsters were not raised together, it is not likely that they will get along and very possible they will fight and injure eachother. Poor Rhino! If there is a visible wound, putting pressure on it to stop the bleeding and keeping it clean and dry can help. If there is a lot of bleeding ongoing and not stopping, bleeding is from the mouth or anus, or you see other signs of illness, seeking out vet care right away is best to try and find the cause.
