My 7-year-old unspayed bunny has wool block. What's happening?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I have noticed that you listed Ms. Bunny as unspayed. Unspayed female rabbits are at a very high risk of cancer of the uterus, so I would be very worried about that as a possibility for the weight loss. The muddy urine could also be due to high calcium in her diet leading to calcium build-up in the urine. This can cause rabbits to have sludgy urine. It is important to get this checked right away. Your vet will try to empty out the bladder, increase the fluid intake, and get a better diet that is lower in calcium. I would suggest having her seen by your vet and discuss her diet, get a urine sample, and check out her uterus. Best of luck with Ms. Bunny.

Ingested foreign bodies, GI stasis, metabolic disorders (liver, kidney), infections are all possible. Yogurt and crackers are not a good food item for rabbits as they do not digest dairy or carbohydrates well, and can lead to additional GI upset. Even if obstructed, they can continue to pass feces for 1-2 days. Try syringe offering water. Good luck.

The fact that he is eating is encouraging, but this appears to be a problem of gastric stasis. This can happen due to hair blockages, but can also be caused by many other conditions such as dehydration, lack of adequate fiber in the diet, lack of exercise, or stress. The feeding of pineapple and other fruits has been attempted in the past to break down hair in the stomach, but unfortunately this and other treatments have not proven to be very effective. Considering that this has a potential to turn into an emergency, I recommend taking JJangdol to the vet tomorrow. They will be able to help identify the cause of this and provide the most effective treatment. For now, it's best to make sure that he is not having any stressors, is able to move around as much as possible, and gets plenty of water. Having a water bowl rather than a sipper bottle has been shown to increase water intake. You should also feed fresh grass, high-quality hay soaked in water, or Oxbow pellets with some water added as the majority of his diet. If at any time JJangdol stops eating and/or starts to act very depressed, then this is an emergency and he should go to the vet as soon as possible. I hope that helps and he gets better soon.

Possible causes include gastrointestinal disease (obstruction, GI stasis, infections), urinary problems (kidney/ureteral.bladder/urethral stones, infections), reproductive problems (endometrosis, neoplasia, other) and more. A veterinary visit is highly recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan. Monitor food and water intake, defecation and urination. If possible, offer water via a syringe. If Junior continues to seem uncomfortable, an emergency visit tonight might be needed. Good luck.

Thanks for reaching out about Boopsie. She needs to see a veterinarian tonight, especially is still bleeding and anorexic. Discharging blood can be from uterine cancer, a urinary tract stone or other serious causes. The sooner this is dealt with, the better the prognosis. Good luck.

I agree it sounds like it might be GI stasis or a blockage and this is very serious. If there are any 24 hour vets you can go to then I would go right away. Otherwise, you can dilute the critical care with water as it says on the package, and feed it every 2 hours. You can try adding a bit of pineapple juice as well. If the abdomen isn't bloated you can try gentle massage of the abdomen, but only if your little rabbit doesn't seem sore. Best of luck with your little one, and get it to a vet as soon as possible!

In rabbits who aren't spayed, uterine cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer with up to 60% of female rabbits developing it after three years of life. It is malignant, and it is fatal if not treated. Even if treated (which involves spaying the rabbit), there's always a chance that the cancer has spread.
