Why is my bunny leaving cecotrophes even after diet changes?

However, if you notice that Julius is not eating, or has not defecated for over 24 hours, he may require veterinary attention.

This is a normal type of feces for rabbits to make and is normally consumed directly from the anus, which is why most owners do not see it. Most rabbits eat this feces based on their vitamin needs and it can vary day to day. I recommend feeding Stanley a diet of rabbit pellets, hay, and occasional fresh fruits and veggies. Your bunny was probably just used to eating the lettuce and is adjusting to his new diet. You did the right thing by offering him only the pellets and hay. This is what is most beneficial to him. Since his stools are normal I would not worry at this point. If he stops passing stools, stops eating, or if you suspect he is losing weight, then you should take him to the veterinarian to be checked out. I hope this helps. It is not unusual for rabbits to defecate several times throughout the day - they are hind gut fermenters and therefore eat almost constantly, so they produce a lot of poop! As long as the feces is not soft/liquid, frequent passing of fecal balls is normal. If you are ever concerned that Khargi is sick or acting abnormal, Khargi should be evaluated by your veterinarian! You can always bring a fecal sample with you to the vet to be evaluated for any parasites. I hope this is helpful!

Review the diet to ensure proper nutrition. Offer timothy hay, oat hay or similar grasses in unlimited amounts, as much as they want to eat. About 1/8 cup of commercial pellets can be offered to each rabbit daily. 1-2 cups of fresh greens and vegetables can also be added to the diet. Clean the droppings out frequently, daily if necessary, to prevent them from eating "normal" stool. Provide a variety of toys, playtime and exercise to keep them engaged and distracted from their droppings.

Bunnies have two types of feces, their day feces which are round and firm, and the "night feces" which are softer and elongated/ variable shaped. If you are seeing softer feces this means either that Blackberry has diarrhea or that he is not eating his night feces (which he should). In either case he should see a vet.

The jelly like substance that you were seeing was likely mucous, and this usually comes from the colon when there has been a disruption in the way that the large intestine is moving. I am not sure if you can think of any diet changes that have occurred in the last week or so, or any stressful events - these are often the culprits of a one time jelly-like blob. The feces can also become a strange shape when this happens. If it only occurred the one time, I would just monitor Bugsy. If it continues, or if it happens again, I would recommend having him evaluated by a veterinarian as this may be indicative of him being sick. A rabbit's intestinal tract is very important, and something as simple as this is often an indicator of illness/disease.
