My red eared slider turtle has began to develop white chalky spots on his shell. Can you please help?

Thanks for reaching out about Juanita. This is often a result of hard water (high mineral tap water). Can the white chalk be gently removed with a fingernail? Check your local pet store for water additives that could soften the water. If this is due to hard water, there is little harm to Juanita. If the shell is soft or your unable to remove, a veterinary visit is recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan.
