My turtle's penis is hanging out. What to do if no vet is available?

A veterinary visit would work the best but if none available you could try applying a topical antibiotics ointment. A petroleum based product will adhere better in water but is still likely to wash off. Keep water quality as pristine as possible. Systemic antibiotics (injections) would improve chance of success. Hello, sorry to hear about Grey. He will need to have that reduced before it becomes infected and the tissue becomes compromised. Some of the darker spots may already be compromised. Have Grey seen by a veterinarian immediately to have this treated and reduced. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Thanks for reaching out about Lemon and including photos. Even though the pictures are slightly out of focus, what is observed is the penis and probable rectal prolapse. Causes are likely straining to defecate or urinate. A veterinary visit is recommended as soon as possible because once the rectal tissue dries, unlikely to be saved. Trying to keep it moist with a wet paper towel might work for now but is not a treatment. Good luck.

Unfortunately, the "tumor" cannot be appreciated in the images provided. Consider an exam with your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles. Also, decrease the amount of pellets being fed. Remove any uneaten food once the turtle stops eating. Offer a balanced diet consisting of protein (feeder fish, nightcrawlers, etc), fresh greens and vegetables and a small amount of commercial pellets. Provide vitamin and mineral supplementation as well as adequate UVB lighting.

Thanks for reaching out. Do you mean the cloaca is exposed or the uterus (prolapsed tissue) is exposed? The cloaca should contract, just try and keep the tissue clean and ensure she is able defecate and urinate. If tissue is exposed, clean with a warm moistened towel and lubricate with petroleum jelly. A veterinary visit is recommended as sutures might be necessary. Antibiotics, pain medications and hormones might also be recommended. Remove all nesting material and alter photoperiod to dissuade additional egg laying. Check and correct diet as calcium and other nutritional deficiencies can play a part in egg binding. Heat support in the 80-85 F range is also recommended. Good luck.

A prolapse in a bearded dragon should be considered an emergency. Max needs to be examined by your veterinarian or an experienced herp vet. Severe prolapses may require surgical correction. The underlying cause (impaction, parasites, etc.) must also be diagnosed and treated to prevent recurrence. In the meantime, keep him on moist, clean paper towels. Make a paste with table sugar and water. apply it to the vent for 20-30 minutes. Rinse with sterile saline and apply a sterile lubricant until you can get Max to your vet.
