Is my turtle healthy? How to check for shell damage and gender?

I am very sorry but we cannot tell sex of the turtle based off of these pictures. I would recommend taking him to a vet so he can be properly sexed. If he is a new addition to your family it is a good idea to make sure he is healthy too!

In box turtles, males tend to have a more colorful head, red eyes, short and thick claws on the hind feet and a concavity of the plastron (bottom shell). In the image provided, it is difficult to make out these details. You can also have the turtle examined by an experienced herp vet to determine sex.

Males also have longer, more narrow tails, where the females have shorter tails and the cloaca is at the edge of the shell. Good luck.

Looks can be deceiving, but the shell looks fine in the picture provided. "Heathy" is more than just a clean shell though. He should be eating and defecating normally, basking regularly and swimming. There should be no redness or pitting on the shell. Provide clean water at proper temp, a basking spot also at proper temp, UVB lighting and an appropriate diet. Males have longer front claws and a longer, thicker tail. Determining sex can be difficult in turtles measuring less than 4 inches. Consider separating the turtles until the smaller one is larger. Sliders can be quite territorial and a larger turtle may injure a significantly smaller one.

It's quite difficult as their shells are very similar. The male has a long thin tail with a slit like cloaca far up the tail. Whereas the female has a short fat tail with a star shaped cloaca close to the body. If in doubt you may need to go to a reptile vet.
