How do I figure out if my Russian Tortoise is male or female?

I am afraid without a photo of your turtle I cannot tell you if he or she looks healthy. You need to upload a photo for that. You can tell a male turtle by its longer tail and that the bottom of his carapace (shell) appears hollowed out, so it would easily fit on top of the rounded shell of a female. Females have a flat bottom of the shell.

Males have longer front claws and a longer, thicker tail. Determining sex can be difficult in turtles measuring less than 4 inches. Consider separating the turtles until the smaller one is larger. Sliders can be quite territorial and a larger turtle may injure a significantly smaller one.

In box turtles, males tend to have a more colorful head, red eyes, short and thick claws on the hind feet and a concavity of the plastron (bottom shell). In the image provided, it is difficult to make out these details. You can also have the turtle examined by an experienced herp vet to determine sex.

Juveniles smaller than about 4 inches are difficult to sex. Once they reach that size or larger, it is quite simple.Female sliders are larger, have shorter front claws and thinner. smaller tails than males. Males can be territorial and could "argue" if the tank is not of sufficient size. Ideally, you want to allow about 10 gallons per inch of turtle. Sliders can get big (12 inches fully grown), so be sure you have the space and budget for a large tank.

Males don't tend to get along with each other once they hit sexual maturity, and you may end up with injuries or the need for two tanks. Males will typically only be aggressive to females in the breeding season, but the same issues can arise depending on how aggressive the male is being. As far as determining sex, it is difficult to tell visually what sex they are until they are a bit older and getting closer to sexual maturity. There are other techniques that can be utilized such as endoscopic sexing, however you would need to consult with a veterinarian to have this procedure performed. I am very sorry but we cannot tell sex of the turtle based off of these pictures. I would recommend taking him to a vet so he can be properly sexed. If he is a new addition to your family it is a good idea to make sure he is healthy too!
