How do I stop my bearded dragon from licking and swallowing sand?

This is an excellent question, unfortunately most places that are selling bearded dragon still recommend sand for bedding, which is in my opinion and experience a big misguidance. what you are describing is happening to many bearded dragons, they eat of the sand and after a few years they have a sand impaction in their intestines, in most cases it is very difficult to treat and ends up with them dying. I recommend switching the bedding to something else, there are many options and all of them are better than sand in my eyes.

One or two pellets will likely pass through uneventfully. Monitor for lethargy, loose droppings or loss of appetite. You can soak him in a warm 50/50 solution of water and unflavored PediaLyte. During the soak, gently massage his abdomen from front to back to stimulate defecation. I agree with the sites claiming sand is dangerous for your beardie, i have seen many beardies with sand impaction, many of them too far gone to be saved, i strongly recommend any of the other alternatives for bedding as they are all safer than sand.

Hi, Most likely he will not get impacted, but I would watch him closely for the next few days. I would suggest switching the substrate to something less hazardous like yesterday's news or artificial turf. It may not look as nice as the sand, but is safer. P.S. What a nice pattern Snuggles has :)

As long as it isn't bleeding or spreading, you can try managing it at home. Clean it with diluted betadine or chlorhexidine solution. Let it dry then apply a dab of triple antibiotic ointment. Use paper towels for substrate and change them daily until the spot heals. If it doen't heal, see your veterinarian or an experienced herp vet. For the glass surfing, try rearranging the enclosures. Confirm proper environmental parameters. Survey the area around them for any negative stimuli. Eliminate or decrease any if found. You can tape a tank surround (or paper) on the sides to limit views and reflections.

I wouldn't be overly concerned at this point although he may be constipated or have the start of a blockage. Is it possible your mom overfed him? I notice you have him on sand which often causes blockages. I suggest you switch to a more proper substrate ( like indoor/outdoor carpet or newspaper). Although some expert may disagree, as long as Ash isn't ingesting the calcium sand then you can continue to use it. Calcium sand is not the same as play sand which would not be recommended. If you don't want to use calcium sand, consider slate, reptile carpet or even paper towels for easy cleaning.
