My bearded dragon has a foot wound and glass surfs. What's wrong?

Monitor for any aggression. You may need to separate them, especially if the enclosure is too small. You can use a diluted betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution daily to gently cleanse the affected area. Monitor for lethargy, decreased appetite, redness, swelling or discharge. See your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles if the wound doesn't heal or if any of the above mentioned symptoms develop.

Make sure his cage is large enough. A 20 gallon tank will be sufficient for now (if that's what you have) but as he grows, you will need to move him into a larger enclosure. Provide multiple hiding boxes and plants (real or fake) for privacy. You can also use cage wraps or backgrounds to provide additional privacy. He can come out of the cage also but be sure he does not get chilled or escape into a small crack or crevice.

Any small nick or scratch can become infected. He could have scratched himself in or out or the enclosure. If he is behaving normally, you can treat it topically with a diluted Betadine cleanse followed by a dab of triple antibiotic ointment daily until it resolves. See your veterinarian or an experienced herp veterinarian if he becomes lethargic, loses his appetite or if the area doesn't heal, becomes swollen or has discharge.

While it is true that these signs could be due to trauma caused by the other beardie, it is also possible that it could be due to inappropriate nutrition or environment. Make sure that you are providing your bearded dragons with adequate calcium (supplemented in the food), and sufficient heat and UVB lighting in their cages. Thanks for reaching out about Harley and including photos. Infections can cause skin necrosis and pain, and maybe that is why he is chewing on his foot. Pain medications and a bandage, in addition to the antibiotics would be recommended. Not all antibiotics treat all infections, so maybe another choice. Occasionally amputating the affected foot above the diseased area will stop the spread. A second veterinary visit is recommended to help. Basically it could be an infection or a trauma, it sounds like she was in a great deal of pain, i would recommend taking her to a reptile vet as she might need an antibiotic course and some pain medications.

It does appear to be of the takydromus species. These grass lizards are common and fairly easy to keep. Being adept climbers, more vertical space should be offered in an enclosure. Branches and vines can be placed for climbing. Bring reptiles, they need an external heat source and UVB lighting. Daytime temps can range from 24 C to 30 C (75-85 F). Provide a basking spot of around 35 C to 38 C (95-100 F) using a heat lamp. Aim for 70-80% humidity. Provide a shallow bowl for water. Mist the cage daily. Feed appropriately sized prey, no bigger than the space between the eyes, that have been gutload for 24 hours prior to offering. This will maximize nutritional value. Crickets, mealworms, dubia roaches, waxworms or wingless fruit flies can all be offered. Dust prey with a calcium supplement and a multivitamin supplement several times weekly. Ideally, the wound should be addressed by a veterinarian experienced in treating reptiles. You can clean it with dilute Betadine or chlorhexidine solution daily and monitor for redness, bleeding, lethargy or decreased appetite.
