I am very concerned that your snake may have developed septicemia which is most often caused by bacteria living in the snakes skin that take an opportunity to infect. You need to go to a reptile vet right away to habe the snake examined. If it is septicemia itis very serious and needs high doses of antibiotics to treat. Sometimes there is an underlying condition that predisposes to it.

Hello there! Spied isn't looking so great. The common reptile term for any degenerative condition of the skin and scales is "scale rot." There are quite a few different issues that could be causing his skin and scales to appear this way. Humidity and moisture that is too high in the cage can encourage the growth of bacteria in between the scales. Malfunctioning heat rocks can cause thermal burns, which, if left untreated, can also become infected. Bloodborne bacterial infections that have spread throughout the body, called sepsis, can manifest in skin lesions like this as well. There are other possibilities, such as viruses, fungi, and parasites, that could also be the culprit. The only way to determine the cause and therefore the course of treatment is to visit your veterinarian - preferably, a veterinarian that is comfortable treating reptiles or that specializes in herpetology. I realize it would be a long drive, but this might require a trip to Cornell Veterinary School. It's really important that Spied gets to a vet soon as this condition could be dangerous for him, especially if he has an infection in his blood.

At the vet, Spied will receive a complete physical exam, and potentially some bloodwork. They may also collect a sample of his skin for microscopic examination or culture. Most likely, the vet will prescribe topical antibiotics, systemic antibiotics, or both. You may be asked to help with treatment by cleaning his skin at home with special antiseptics.

Why is my snake's vent swollen, pink, bloody, and smells bad?

Thanks for reaching out about Princess and including photos. These swellings appear to be infected scent glands. Try some warm water soaks to soften, remove substrate such as bark or dirt. Provide a soft clean towel as a substrate, to prevent further contamination. A veterinary visit is highly recommended to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan, as this will most likely need systemic antibiotics to treat. Check and correct husbandry as sub-standard environmental temperatures can possible play a part of this disease process. Good luck.

Help! My ball python's skin ripped from tape. What should I do?

Eclipse should be examined by an experienced herp veterinarian. He may need antibiotics to treat or prevent infection. Monitor for discharge, lethargy, odor or loss of appetite. Keep the area clean and dry. You can apply a dab of triple antibiotic ointment topically. Use paper towels as substrate until the spot heals. It may take a a couple sheds, but he should recover. In the future, if he ever gets any adhesive stuck on him, use a bit of olive oil to soak the area then gently remove the adhesive.

My snake has lumps. Are they from mites, or a new heat lamp burn?

Those bumps aren't presenting the way burns would, but without a physical exam, it is difficult to say for sure. Infection would be high on the list. You'll need to have him seen by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles. If infection is diagnosed, S will need antibiotics. Keep him warm and as stress free as possible until he sees the doctor. S soak in a warm 50/50 solution of water and unflavored PediaLyte can treat or prevent minor dehydration. It may also provide some itch relief.

My snake escaped! It has cuts. What should I do for its wounds?

If the snake has wounds on its body I would recommend a veterinary exam to be sure antibiotic treatment isn't necessary. You can clean off the wounds with a mild warm soapy water for now and schedule an appointment with your vet when they open tomorrow. The topical antibiotic I have used in snakes is called silvadene, but it is a prescription only medication so if that is what is required, you will need to get a prescription from your veterinarian for this medication.

My ball python is soaking, not eating, and has red patches. Is it ill?

I am sorry for the loss of your snakes. Ideally, Ivory should be physically examined by your veterinarian or an experienced herp vet, especially in light of your recent losses. The spots could indicate infection (bacterial, fungal or even a viral condition). It is difficult to make a detrmination by looking at an image. In the meantime, clean and sanitize all the enclosures, bowls, hides and tank furniture. Discard anything that cannot be sanitized. Wash your hands thoroughly between handling each snake. Confirm, again if necessary, proper environmental parameters. Low temps can lead to stress which may predispose a snake to infection or illness. High humidity can foster bacterial or fungal overgrowth. Consider using paper towels as substrate until the issue is resolved. Change them daily to maintain clean conditions.

Why is my snake breathing with mouth open and has yellow scales?

It sounds like she either is trying to regurgitate a meal or she has a respiratory infection. When was she last fed? How large was the prey? How often do you feed her? Do you hear any wheezing? Any bubbles coming out of the nose or mouth? I don't really have enough information here to be helpful. The yellowing of the scales appears to be mild scale rot. You can try treating her at home with dilute betadine solution (1 part betadine to 10 parts water). If she has yellow scales all over her body you can soak her in a betadine solution bath for 20 minutes TWICE a day every day until the infection clears up. If it is just the location in the photo you can just apply the dilute betadine directly to those areas with a cotton swab. The betadine solution should be 10% betadine and the water should be lukewarm (80-85°F). After bathing, rinse the snake off and apply a topical antibiotic ointment (something like Neosporin will work fine). If the infection doesn't get better or even worsens, discontinue the betadine baths and seek professional help immediately.
