Is my guppy's black belly spot and white tail normal or a disease?

Melanin, which is responsible for the black, is part of the immune system in fish. The melanin is mobilized from deep in the skin, to the surface in response to a problem. As a young fish, probably newly acquired, it is worrisome regarding an external parasite. A veterinary visit should be scheduled to perform a skin scrape to identify the parasite, as different parasites require different treatments. Good luck.

There will be multiple darker spots on the belly. The spots can grow, change and fade as the dog ages. They are flat with the skin, there is no redness and they do not bother the dog. If this seems to be the case for him, testing should not be needed. This is not a cause for concern. If the bumps are itchy or develop scabs, then this is different and could indicate an infection. If he is eating normally I wouldn't be overly concerned. The only time I would be concerned is if his color was changing to black or brown. Now, that being said, the biggest problem with these fish getting sick is incorrect husbandry. So, be absolutely certain that you have the tank set up correctly, water is correct, you are feeding the right diet, etc..... I hope this helps. Thanks for reaching out about Kai and including photos. This could be a solitary Ich lesion (which is unusual, as there are usually multiple) or a hyper-active mucous gland. Check water parameters for pH, ammonia, nitrites and nitrates, correcting any problems. If more lesions appear, a veterinary visit can help with a diagnosis through a microscopic examination of a skin scrape, and therefore prescribe the appropriate treatment. Good luck.

It could be early ich (white spot) infection or another infection (bacterial or fungal). To be safe, separate him into a quarantine tank and monitor for any change. You can treat for ich as you did it in the past if indicated. Bacterial and fungal infections have different treatments, so I would be hesitant to recommend a specific medication without more information or a definitive diagnosis. You can use plain aquarium salt (NOT table salt or Epsom salt). As a general tonic to reduce stress, increase gill function, treat minor infection of many types and to aid in recovery. This can be added to the quarantine tank at 1 teaspoon per gallon of water. Treat for 10-14 days then reassess the condition.
