Goldfish tank mates: Danios, heaters, and fish separation anxiety?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Fish | Gold Fish

Hi! I plan to move my goldfish to a 45 gallon, and I’m curious about what kind of fish dan go with them. I currently have a zebra danio with them in the 20 gallon I am currently keeping them in, but I found out that zebra’s require a heater while goldfish do not. And even though I have kept them together for a long time, I don’t want the danio to suffer. Another dumb question but would separating them cause anything, like anxiety for the fish, or am I just being a bit paranoid.

Thanks for reaching out about Corn. Despite what most people think, fish are subjected to stressors and are social organisms. Whether the goldfish and danio are bonded or not, can not comment. You could provide a heater for the goldfish also, as they do better is kept at a more consistent temperature.
As for other fish, goldfish and tetra families do pretty well, although goldfish have been known to occasionally eat smaller fish.
Good luck.
