What fish can safely live with my goldfish in a home aquarium?

Choose fish that are cold water fish. Goldfish do best in water that is between 65 and 75 F. Weather, or Dojo, loaches, Rosy Barbs or Zebra Danios are all potential tank mates. The loaches do best in groups of 3 or more. If you decide to add fish, consider a larger tank, at least 20 gallons. The reason is that goldfish produce a large bio load that can quickly lead to poor water quality. They also grow rapidly depending on the type of goldfish you have. A tank that is too small may cause stunted growth which can greatly decrease the life span.

You could provide a heater for the goldfish also, as they do better is kept at a more consistent temperature. This will depend on the size of your turtle and your tank. If you have a 40 gallon tank you can only have 1 map turtle for the first year of its life and no other turtles or fish. If you have a much larger tank you can put fish in to the tank, depending on your water temperature. Gold fish are ok, cichlids, guppies, mosquito fish...they all work and your turtle should not eat them.

The goldfish can get very big and may require a significantly larger tank as they grow and grow. As a rule of thumb, you need 1 gallon of water per inch of body length of fish. So if you have three 1 inch fish, you will need 3 gallons of water. I suspect you are at your max already in the smaller tank. Just so you know, most people do not have goldfish in tanks with tropical fish. You may consider getting two tanks One for your cold water fish like the goldfish, and one for your tropical fish that require a warm water temperature. For the goldfish I would suggest a minimum of a 20 gallon tank. For the Danio, I suggest to get a few more of these as they are schooling fish and a 10 gallon would be just fine. Most of the compatible fish are schooling fish that do best in groups of 4-8. This would include Neon Tetras, Ember Tetras, Harlequin Rasboras or White Cloud Minnows. That many fish may be too much for a 3 gallon tank. Other non-fish option include Ghost Shrimp, Zebra Snails or African Dwarf Frogs.

As log as she is acclimated to the water temperature, she should be fine. Place her in a bag of water and then float the bag in the tank for 20-30 minutes. You can then scoop her out with a net and place her in the new tank. Confirm proper chemistry of the new tank using a home test kit or by submitting a water sample for testing. The local Petco may do this for free or for a small fee. Aim for 0 ppm ammonia and nitrites with nitrates at 20 ppm or less. pH should be around 7 and water temp should range between 65 F and 72 F since goldfish are cold water fish.

Ideally, the goldfish should be in at least 20 gallons. The reason being they produce a larger than average bio load (wastes) than other fish. This can quickly overwhelm a small tank and filter. Keeping Cherry Shrimp or other small invertebrates with goldfish would not be recommended. Unless the tank is heavily planted providing lots of cover, the shrimp will be eaten by goldfish.
