Why is my betta fish biting his tail? Will a betta's tail grow back?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Fish | Betta | Male | unneutered | 0.5 lbs

My betta fish has been biting his tail recently but I haven't caught him doing it again. Last time, I saw that he had a piece of his tail in his mouth and he was just resting under his favorite plant. I didn't know what to do and I contacted Petsmart (my local pet store) and they told me it was normal. But I was hoping to know if the tail could possibly grow back or if there is anything to recover the missing parts?

Thanks for reaching out about Gummy. Not sure of biting the tail is normal, especially if chewing to the point of removing part of the tail. Itching or irritation are most likely. Test and correct water quality including pH, ammonia, nitrite and nitrates. These can be dermal irritants. Bacterial or parasitic concerns, spinal problems (scoliosis due to vitamin C deficiency) are also common and a veterinary visit would be needed to assess and provide a diagnostic/treatment plan.
Good luck.
