Why is my Yorkie running in circles, disoriented, and staring blankly?

I certainly understand being worried and scared about Yuki, it sounds like he has had a sudden change in behavior. It could be he is suffering from vestibular disease causing him to tilt his head, walk in circles, and bump into walls. Vestibular disease is a sudden, non-progressive disturbance of balance, and it can be caused by a middle or inner ear infection, toxins, trauma, hypothyroidism, and idiopathic (no known cause). When it comes on suddenly like it has with Yuki, it's best to take him into a vet immediately. I advise having him seen by a vet now. Best of luck.

Poor guy. This breed is high risk for having a condition called a portosystemic (liver) shunt that causes unexplained neurological symptoms like this. Drunken walk (ataxia) is one of the symptoms we often see. I would highly recommend at least taking him in to your local vet for some baseline bloodwork to check his liver enzymes. The vet can also do a thorough exam of his ears and make sure there is no debris deep in the canal, which would not be visible without special instrumentation (otoscope) that your vet carries. Bailey is an older girl, and these behaviors are signs of being sick. She could have kidney disease, diabetes, a pyometra (an infection of the uterus that is fatal without treatment), or even cancer causing her symptoms. She needs to see a vet now for them, please take her into one immediately. I recommended having a physical exam, geriatric blood panel, and urinalysis done. I hope this helps!

These are certainly scary and concerning symptoms. I'm sure you are very worried about Bella as am I. I would recommend that Bella be seen by a veterinarian right away as the symptoms you report could be signs of something serious like low blood sugar. She is a tiny little dog and a Yorkie as well so there are some breed related issues that can cause similar signs. Seeing a veterinarian right away will help to rule out many things and hopefully get her feeling better as soon as possible. I reviewed the labs and I don’t see a cause for the symptoms you describe. ALP is a liver enzyme but it is also made in growing bones and an elevation can be normal in a puppy. Calcium and phosphorous can also be increased in young growing dogs. Albumin is a little low and so is total protein (albumin is one of the proteins) and this can be seen with parasites or inflammatory diseases. It can also be seen with portosystemic shunt if there are other symptoms. I did not see blood glucose and would be concerned about that possibility.

Poor Elvis. Lethargy and walking slowly are very non-specific signs so it is hard to say what to look for in particular with no other symptoms to speak of. The knots just above his ball area sounds like his normal anatomy, this is likely his bulbourethral glands. However the lethargy is of some concern, so a proper physical exam by your vet would be the next best step. They will check him from head to toe for any abnormalities, including any abnormal heart rate, breathing rate or temperature (which would indicate infection). Make sure to check the house and yard for any toxins that he may have been exposed to. If testing needs to be ran, then the vet will recommend those to gather more clues as to the underlying cause of his illness. I hope things go well.

Hello. This is unfortunate for you and your puppy. Sometimes, very small toy breed puppies can not regulate their blood sugar and become hypoglycemic, have seizures and neurological issues. If your vet has not monitored his blood glucose- that needs to be done. This can be treated with a high caloric supplement called NutriCal that can be given throughout the day to keep his blood sugar levels in the normal range. The other thing to test for is a liver shunt. This is a congenital malformation of blood vessels that go to and from the liver. If your puppy has a shunt, their liver is usually smaller than normal and cannot perform its normal functions. This can cause toxins to build up and that causes seizures. This disorder can sometimes be corrected with surgery or managed with special diets and medication. If your veterinarian is uncomfortable moving forward , ask to be referred to an internal medicine specialist or even just another general practitioner with more experience with these issues.
