Yorkie low blood sugar, no Karo. Can I give him sugar or honey?

She’s tiny, she could have low sugar or hypoglycemia. This can become life threatening. Please give her a 1/2 teaspoonful of honey or Karo syrup. You can rub it into her gums if she won’t lick it. I would try to have her eat small amounts of small breed puppy food at least six times daily until she’s bigger and stronger. If you still can’t get her to eat she will need veterinary treatment soon. This is a serious medical problem. Rub honey on her gums. There is no set amount, rather she needs as much honey as it takes to alleviate the signs of hypoglycemia and starts suckling, I would start with a rub, then wait 10 to 15 minutes, then rub in more, and keep it up until she feels better. Ring your vet office now. There should be emergency information on the answering machine or service. The RCVS dictates that vets provide emergency service either themselves or refer to one.

A little bit under the gums will help bring his blood glucose level up. You may also try warming up her food (if it is wet food) and offering that to her. I'm sorry to hear about your puppy. A couple things could be going on. One is that he just has a hard time keeping his blood sugar up. We often see this in toy breed puppies. They need to be fed small frequent meals and you should keep a nutritional supplements handy. They usually outgrow it. The other thing I'm concerned about is a portosystemic shunt. This requires blood work and often times a CT scan to diagnose but it can be corrected with surgery. I would get more information from your veterinarian about what they are suspecting the problem is. Also, get a second opinion if you're not comfortable with what you're being told. Hopefully the situation is fixable!

See how she is after this. With her being so small, her blood sugar could be having difficulties regulating, especially if she is a picky eater or doesn't eat that much. Yes if the blood sugar is low but more often people tend to give a small amount of karo syrup instead. Place some on your finger and rub it on the gums if they don't swallow it and it will absorb in.

Puppies have limited glucose reserves. This is why they need to be fed frequently. It is normal and not a reason for euthanasia. Have him examined by your veterinarian to rule out any medical causes. Feed a good quality puppy food and supplement with NutriCal, a calorie dense paste that is used for quick energy. As he gets older, you won't need to feed him as often and by one year of age, he should be eating twice daily.
