Why is my Yorkie aggressive? Common reasons for dog aggression.

Poor Reggie! It's unusual to see aggression appear this late in life without an underlying medical cause, so I would be very concerned that something may be wrong. Reggie may be feeling sick or in pain for some reason, or he may have a neurologic problem such as a brain tumor causing this out-of-character behavior. I would recommend taking Reggie to the vet for a full exam and diagnostic work-up to help determine what may be causing him to act this way. Depending on what the underlying problem is, it may be treatable with medication.

Yorkies can be somewhat protective, as all terriers can, however they don't have a reputation for being aggressive. I'm assuming your considering getting a Yorkie puppy, and if so you can get her off to a good start by selecting a breeder that takes measures to properly socialize the puppies before they leave their mother. This includes exposing them to humans of all sizes, so that they are comfortable with people. As soon as your puppy has had all of his/her puppy shots (16 weeks) you can enroll in a "puppy kindergarten" class, and this helps to establish good behavior and manners from the start.

Hi there, sorry to hear of your situation. It sounds a lot like Dakota had become very anxious and most likely dead aggressive due to a bad experience that she had before. This is actually quite common, escpeically amongst several female animals. My best advice if you are a guest here is to completely separate your pet from the others for the duration of the stay-for the safety of all pets involved. Most issues like this require lengthy training and re-programming to decrease fear and anxiety in your pet. She is also older and will likely take longer. Depending on the length of your stay-it will probably not be possible to do the necessary re-training whilst you are there. There are medications to lessen anxiety for a short time-but would require a visit to your local vet for an exam and likely blood work to make sure they medications would be safe for Dakota to take. There are many possible reasons for this, I'm afraid - aggression is a complex behavior issue, so it can be hard to provide a succinct answer in this format. Many dogs develop aggression issues related to fear or anxiety around the age of 2-3 when they reach social maturity, so it's possible that this may be the issue. Or, since I see that Chucky is a bit older than that, he may have a medical problem causing him to be painful or uncomfortable - this is a common reason for "new" aggression in a previously friendly dog. I would recommend having Chucky examined by a vet as a good first step - he/she can check for anything that may be causing him pain or making him not feel well, and get him started on treatment if needed. If everything is normal medically, then it would be best to make an appointment with a veterinary behaviorist to help you determine what is causing the aggression - he/she can observe your dogs in person and also give you a step-by-step treatment plan to work on the issue.

Most of the time this is a play behavior and secondary to teething. However I would still recommend addressing this behavior with Buddy. If you are playing with him and he starts to bite I would tell him no and stop play. Also you can try and redirect his attention to a toy or something he is allowed to chew on or bite. There are many many reasons dogs display aggression. Anxiety, fear, territorial aggression, and possessive aggression are just a few of the common possibilities. I would recommend avoiding any situation in which Jake has had dog fights starting immediately (ie. no walks if on a leash, separate dogs in the house if it was a housemate) and scheduling an appointment with your vet right away to discuss the issue.

I would first have her evaluated by a veterinarian to make sure she does not have an underlying medical condition. In some cases, pain can cause animals to behave unpredictably.
