When should I spay my new female puppy & prevent old dog's disease?

Babesia is spread most commonly via tick bite or by blood transfusion. A tick must remain attached and feeding for 2-3 days before the organism can be passed on to the dog. It is not likely to pass from dogs living together. The foundation of prevention is aggressive tick control.

Make sure she has vaccines including DHPPi (distemper, hepatitis, parvo, parainfluenza) and rabies. Depending on her age, the vet the can tell you her vaccination schedule. Spay her before she goes into her first heat (around six months of age) to significant reduce the risk of her developing mammary tumors and eliminate the chance of her developing a pyometra later in life. Put her on a good flea and tick prevention program, make sure to deworm her, and give her heartworm protection. I would have your pup seen by a vet this week to start all of these things to keep her healthy :-)

Hello, given the tick exposure, there is always a risk that your pet may contract a tick born disease. Unfortunately, there is no accurate diagnosis of infection until some time has passed. You should consider speaking with your veterinarian about checking a tick disease snap test (4DX), if available in 3-4 weeks or sooner if Zoe develops any signs of illness (limping, decreased appetite, lethargy, pale gums, collapse). Zoe should be on strict monthly, flea and tick preventative to avoid continued exposure to ticks. Hope this helps and best of luck.

So, you will want tonfeed it puppy replacement milk from pet store via a bottle every 2 hours, stimulate to urinate and defecate after each feeding byntunning the areas w warm wer paper towel or cloth. Set your alarm every 2 houts overnight too. You will want to keep puppy warm at approx 80 degrees in room as well as.plenty of blankets. You will want to keep it just at home until fully vaccinated. You will begin vaccines at 6 to 8 weeks old. It will get a vaccine then and every 3 to 4 weeks until 16 to 18 weeks old. You can start to introduce dry food about 4 to 5 weeks old. Good luck. I would keep the new dog separated from your old dog as mites are contagious. The ivermectin injection should take care of the mites, however sometimes it takes two or three injections to completely eliminate mites. I would say 3 weeks are probably enough to keep them separate. The doxy will likely eliminate both the Ehrlichiosis and Anaplasmosis within 30 days and your dog should feel much better soon. All these diseases are very hard on your dog, so sleeping is normal. He needs to rest to heal.

Based on the bloodwork, there does not appear to be any signs of infection such as a pyometra. I DO recommend the spay, however, as it will prevent it in the future. If you do not plan on breeding her, this will help to keep her healthier throughout her life. If she is sick, however, now is not the time. I would be interested to know what her symptoms are, and if a chemistry was done with her blood to evaluate her organ function. Hi there! Great question and good for you trying to be prepared. Puppies should start their vaccine protocol as soon as they leave Mom, which is usually about 8 weeks old. They should be vaccinated every 4 weeks until 16 weeks of age, then a booster 1 year later. Spay is usually recommended at around 6 months of age but this can be variable based on the breed.
