Is it safe to walk my dog during her first heat cycle or season?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Snow! Most dogs handle their heat cycles fine. Some dogs have a decreased appetite and are lethargic while others are hyperactive. There are no need for medications as they shouldn't be painful. Just always have her on a leash and do not let her outside a lone or around intact males dogs. I would have her spayed 2 months after the bleeding stops. Hi! I hope you are well too :-) Do not let Jaya outside unsupervised. I would not take her for walks or in public. Take her outside quickly to potty, then bring her right back in. You want to keep her away from all intact males so she doesn't get pregnant. It is safe to spay her after her first heat! I hope this helps, and you stay safe too.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Dog's heats will last a variable amount of time from animal to animal. Some will last a few days, and some can last up to 3 weeks. Most will be on average around 7 days long. A fair amount of blood coloured fluid will be produced, however dogs are pretty good at cleaning themselves up. About 1 month after she has finished bleeding, I would talk to your vet about getting her desexed to prevent pyometra (pus filled uterus), decrease her risks of mastitis, and many different types of cancers, and prevent unwanted pregnancies. Doggy diapers are definitely a good way to keep from having to clean-up blood all day. The cone may be necessary if she tries to take off the diaper, but some dogs tolerate the diaper well. Keeping her outside is another option if the weather is OK, but make sure you have a good fence to keep out any possible intact males in the neighborhood...they will smell her from a mile away. Getting her spayed will prevent future cycles. You can have this done about a month after she's out of heat. It is not pailnful for a bitch to be in heat. But it may not be a good idea to take her out in public--even on a leash. She may attract more than one male, and could provoke a dog fight where one or more dogs, or even you, could get hurt.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Ruby! Sadly diapers are not made to prevent mating, they always find away. The crying is likely because Ruby is feeling some discomfort after mating. It should subside. Since she mated it is likely she is pregnant. If this is something you do not want then see your Vet to discuss options. The diarrhea is likely not related to the breeding. Diarrhea can be from intestinal parasites, hormones from being in heat, stress, viral or bacterial infections, ate something gross, food allergy/intolerance. Since the diarrhea is severe (leaking) I would fast her for 12-24 hours then start feeding her a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice until 2 normal stools. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day. If the diarrhea persists I recommend having a Vet exam. If the crying persists then she should see a Vet today. I hope this helps and I wish you all the best!

If you have the two of them together while she is in heat, she may become pregnant. Even if they are from the same litter and are brother/sister, they will still breed if given the chance. Therefore, if you do not want them to breed, it would be best to either separate them completely while she's in heat, or have one or both of them "fixed." At 6 months old, your male dog can be neutered at any time. It would be best to wait until the female is out of heat, because the surgery is a bit more difficult to perform when the female is in heat as there is increased blood flow to the uterus.
