How long should I wait to get a new puppy after distemper death?

I am so sorry for your loss. There is a risk for bringing in another puppy so soon after distemper was in your place. Good news is that distemper isn’t a very sturdy virus without a “host” so if you thoroughly cleaned, Rancho will likely be okay but no guarantee. While canine distemper can survive in the environment for three to four months, disinfectants can be used to kill the virus. As long as your home has been thoroughly disinfected, your new puppy should be safe in your home.

Parvo can live for up to one year in the environment. I would not risk getting another puppy; an adult dog, yes. If you decide to get another puppy it is up to you but it would need to be FULLY vaccinated, meaning it is at least 4 months of age and has received 3-4 distemper/parvo vaccines at the proper intervals (3-4 weeks apart). Otherwise you are risking this new pups life.

Unfortunately, it takes up to 2 weeks for a vaccination to be effective, so vaccinating the exposed puppies after exposure, will not help protect them from their previous exposure, but may help protect them against future exposure. Hello, dogs whom have recovered from distemper can shed the disease for up to 4 months after recovery. I would allow at least 4 months if your other dog has recently beed diagnosed with distemper before you allow your puppy to interact. If your other dog has recover from distemper longer than that, then you can allow them to interact now. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Yes, you are ready. Since he will be vaccinated first there is less risk and I recommend getting his full vaccination series before he gets on the couch if you’re worried. Some serious symptoms can occur within a week to two weeks but the most dangerous symptoms will only start showing after 3 weeks, this is when the neurological form of the disease may occur and this is the stage they usually do not survive
