Why is my 7-year-old unspayed female dog refusing to eat?

Poor girl. She may have a urinary tract infection that has been going on for a while so now it is making her ill. Other possible causes of general illness in an older pet are: a closed pyometra (spontaneous infected uterus), or organ malfunction (liver, kidneys, etc). I would highly recommend taking her in to your vet right away for testing (urinalysis +/- bloodwork), to determine what the underlying problem is so that we know how best to treat her. Until you can get her seen you can try feeding her small amounts of boiled plain chicken and rice or slightly warmed cans of baby food to provide her some nutrition. Nala is likely not eating anything because she may be sick. You can try to warm up her food and offer her the food that way. However, since she is not spayed there is always a chance she has a uterine infection, sometimes there is a visible discharge from her vulva. Drinking a lot would also be a sign of an infection. Not eating is a very general sign of illness, so she could be suffering from a wide variety of conditions and you should make an appointment with your vet for an exam. Your vet may want to do blood work and, if he suspects a problem in his abdomen, also x-rays.

I am very concerned that Willow may have pyometra (an infection in her uterus). This type of infection can be life-threatening and typically requires surgery to remove the uterus which is the source of the infection. I would recommend taking her to your vet right away so she can be evaluated for this disease.

If she isn't spayed, she could be pregnant, but at 12 years of age, a bigger concern could be a life-threatening infection of the uterus called pyometra. I would recommend that you have Layla examined by a vet ASAP to determine if this could be the case, or what is making her not feel well at this time.

Poor Babygirl! I see that she isn't spayed. One of the causes of her symptoms could be a pyometra, which is an infection of the uterus. This is fatal without treatment. It could also be she has a GI illness, may have eaten something rotten, could have a foreign body, or pancreatitis. Because she hasn't eaten in two days, is vomiting, and I can't rule out a pyometra without seeing her in person, I would take her into a vet immediately. Best of luck.

I am worried that Goose may be pretty sick. Intact female dogs can get a very serious infection of the uterus called a pyometra. Sometimes this will make their belly look larger when in actuality they are losing weight. I would highly encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian as soon as possible. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Lexi! I do not think this is normal and I am worried too! I am concerned that Lexi may have an infected uterus (pyometra). This is a surgical emergency. Dogs can become very sick from this and it is life threatening. It could be something else but it is best to have her examined by your Vet and have a belly X-ray done to see if her uterus is dilated. I hope this helps and I wish Lexi the very best!
