My unspayed dog's teat is swollen, red, hot, and hard. Is it serious?

Nigeria's teat looks very inflamed! This can be due to trauma or infection. You can try applying a cool (not cold) compress to the area for about 5 minutes twice daily and make sure she is not licking or causing further trauma. If it does not resume a normal appearance within 24 hours, I recommend to take her to the vet. Watch for any lethargy, discharge, further swelling or pain as this likely indicates and infection and should be seen. I hope it this helps and feel free to post any further questions.

If Nyia has had a recent heat cycle, this can cause the mammary tissue to swell and it should go away. Intact females can also have problems with false pregnancies and this too will result in swollen teats and will generally reaolve. The teats can get infected and signs include swelling, heat, discomfort, discoloration and discharge. If any of those signs are seen, she should see the veterinarian. Getting her spayed will stop issues with swollen teats and false pregnancy. Dogs can get breast cancer and dogs that are spayed under the age of 2.5 years old have less cancer rates than those who are not spayed. Unspayed dogs can be prone to mammary tumors, which causes swelling and pain. Fifty percent of these mammary tumors are malignant, so you will need to take Mocha into a vet first thing in the morning to have this examined and diagnosed. If she is not spayed the number one reason for swollen teats is mammary (breast) cancer. If she recently had puppies then it could be severe mastitis. Either way this is serious. Your vet cannot drain these. I have no idea what they would possibly be referring to. If this is cancer, they have to be surgically removed. Sometimes the cancer is benign. Sometimes it is malignant and will spread to other organs (mainly the lungs). Regardless, the only way to potentially cure this is surgery. Hello. The nipple is definitely red & inflamed, but this does not always indicate the presence of an infection. For now, you can rub a little 1% hydrocortisone on the skin 2-3 times a day, & if it is not looking any better by early in the week, please have your veterinarian take a look. Thank you.

Oh my, that is a problem! I am most suspicious of the following: 1) If she recently weaned puppies (which doesn't look likely based on the appearance of the rest of the mammary chain), it could be she's got a blocked duct thats abscessed or she has severe mastitis. Either of those conditions would likely cause her to be lethargic, decreased appetite, fever, feeling sick. OR 2) She has a tumor that has become infected. A mammary tumor or skin tumor is less likely to make her "feel sick" than what I mentioned just above under #1. Regardless of the cause, you need to take her to your vet. She likely needs antibiotics and I suspect they may talk to you about surgical intervention as well. I suspect she is painful as well and they can get her some medication to make her more comfortable. Dogs who aren't spayed have a 25% chance of developing mammary tumors, and this could potentially be what is causing Chloe's red nipples and discomfort. I'd have her checked out by a vet first thing in the morning. Best of luck.
