Why is my female dog's nipple swollen and red? Is it serious?

Hi there. I am sorry to hear about Opal's troubles. In an unspayed, female dog, a swollen and red hot teat can mean anything from infection to inflammation to cancer. I would definitely have Opal examined by a veterinarian right away to insure she doesn't need medications like antibiotics or anti-inflammatories, to be sure she doesn't have a systemic infection of some kind, or also that she doesn't have a cancerous mammary gland. It is possibly local skin fold infection or mild inflammation around the nipple. Please, clean the area with antiseptic skin solution (ideally containing 4% chlorhexidine, for example Hibiclens) twice a day for 4-5 days. If it does not get better, you will need to take Lady to your local vets for a check.

Hello. The nipple is definitely red & inflamed, but this does not always indicate the presence of an infection. For now, you can rub a little 1% hydrocortisone on the skin 2-3 times a day, & if it is not looking any better by early in the week, please have your veterinarian take a look. Thank you.

You can apply a warm compress to it to help with pain and swelling. She will need to go to a vet to have it checked as it may be an infection or a growth. If she is nervous or anxious then i would call and see what arrangements can be made to minimize her stress. Such as medication for anxiety prior to travel or not waiting in the lobby with other dogs and people but maybe and exam room or the car until they are ready for you.

It doesn't look too serious to me. The nipple is mildly inflammed, which could be due to the surgery she had (for example it was irritated while the skin was scrubbed for the surgery). Please, monitor the nipple for the next few days. If you notice that it is getting more red, swollen or is painful for Ell, please, take her to your local vet for a check.

If you are concerned then you should get a second opinion. It is not normal for a nipple to be red and swollen. It could be infected and she may need an antibiotic to treat. Call another vet and schedule an examination.
