My unneutered dog has pain when humping. Is neutering the cause?

It is never a guarantee that this behavior will be corrected by neutering but in many cases it does help quite a bit. Many times this behavior is because the male dog is establishing dominance over another animal. Other times, this is breeding behavior and is corrected by the drop in testosterone after neutering. Humping is not only a sexual behavior, it can also be a dominance behavior, a stress response, etc. Any new changes lately - new pet in the home, any major changes in his routine or in the house? It's hard to say why Duke might be doing this with only one specific dog. Humping in dogs is often associated with frustration, over-excitement, or can be an attempt to solicit attention or play in some cases. It would help to be able to observe the dogs interacting in order to make a better guess at why he does this. If it's causing a problem, the best option would be to simply separate Duke from this dog when you are at your friend's house, or keep him on-leash so that he can't bother the other dog. You could also try giving him something special to chew on when he is there, such as a bully stick or rawhide, to help keep him busy.

This could be a dominance behavior or may be due to an abnormal production of hormones such as cushings disease. I recommend a full vet check and bloods especially if there are any additional symptoms such as altered appetite and or coat changes

This is not a sexual behavior, but likely a response to stress, anxiety or to assert his dominance. Correct the behavior immediately when you see it. Remove him from the dog with a stern "No" and offer a toy or task to distract him. Praise and reward him when he complies. If he persists, separate him until he settles down. Be firm and be consistent.

Sometimes that type of mourning behavior is more dominance behavior than sexual behavior. In the future a safer way would be to try to entice with food, or distract with a loud noise. Dogs can still hump things even after being neutered because they have learned that it feels good. When you see him getting ready to hump something, immediate distract him with another toy, or ask him to perform a basis command you have taught him. That will get his attention away from humping, and gives him an alternative behavior to perform.
