Unneutered dog has a small ball by his butt. Is it a testicle?

Hi there. If you don't want to neuter him, then yes - I would recommend having the abdominal testicle removed, and leaving the other one alone. The abdominal testicle needs to be removed because it will likely develop into a testicular tumor later on in life if it's not taken out.

If the testicle is just under the skin on his belly he could have an undescended testicle. In puppies this can sometimes correct with age, but if he is 6 months or older it likely won’t drop anymore. The vet can surgically remove the testicle during a neuter surgery.

I'm wondering if your dog was neutered recently - it almost looks like there could be a scrotal incision and discharge in the center of the photo. Either way, the raised area looks like it could be a growth, tumor or abscess/infection and if he was not neutered recently the discharge is concerning. I would definitely recommend having your vet take a look.

Dogs have two testicles. Soon after they are born they descend from the abdomen into the scrotum. If only one has descended then the other testicle is retained in the abdomen. This testicle should be surgically removed since the retained testicle can develop cancer more often than the normal testicle. Usually when he’s neutered they will remove the one in the scrotum and open him up like spaying a female to remove the other one. This can be a genetic problem so I do not recommend breeding him. Check the other testicle in approximately the same location where you found the lump on the first testicle. If you can find another one like it, then you are feeling the head of the so-called epididymis , which is the sperm-holding part of the testicle and belongs there. If the lump you noticed is a third lump (ie there is none like it in the other testicle and you can also find two identical lumps in the testicles) then this needs to be examined by the vet as it may be a tumor, cyst or little abscess.

Yes, I recommend neutering and removing both testicles. This can be a genetic problem so you don’t want to breed him. The testicle that is in the abdomen has an increased chance of developing testicular cancer in the future so removing now is best. If you have had Czar since he was a puppy and know that he was not neutered, then he is considered cryptorchid. This is a concern because testicles that are in the abdomen (not in the scrotum like they are supposed to be) are prone to becoming cancerous. I would recommend scheduling an appointment with your vet to discuss neutering him before he develops any problems.
