How can I treat my dog's acne with over-the-counter products?

They look like they could be ringworm, which is a fungus that infects the skin and causes patchy round area of redness and hairloss. Often a topical antifungal shampoo or cream will help treat this, however in some cases oral antifungal medication may be needed. I recommend monitoring Rocco's response to the treatments that your veterinarian prescribed, and have him evaluated again if signs worsen or do not start to improve within a week! The contact time is very important or it won't work. The longer you can leave it, the better. It will take a few weeks before you notice much improvement. Once the comedones have resolved, you can continue using this shampoo for maintenance (like once every 10-14 days). The best thing you can do is use a medicated shampoo FREQUENTLY. You need one with Benzoyl Peroxide (2.5-3%) like this one: https://www.chewy.com/vetoquinol-vet-solutions-bpo-3/dp/109531 You need to lather it up, leave it sit on her coat for about 10 minutes and then rinse thoroughly. The contact time is EXTREMELY important so the medication can have time to work!!! The benzoyl peroxide keeps the follicles flushed out. I would use it at least 2-3 times a week. Dog acne is best treated with Benzoyl peroxide type products (i.e Stridex pads). Your vet should also have some veterinary product that is specifically for pets and highly effective. Also you will need to likely go with a short course of antibiotics to get things to calm down first. Most dog acne's has a bacterial component which is why antibiotics are needed along with the topical. Chin acne can also be caused by a food allergy. Hypoallergenic diets should be considered here such as Royal Canin hypoallergenic hydrolyzed protein, Royal Canin selected protein Potato and Duck, or Purina limited ingredient just to name a few. Hello. I would not apply any products, however you can try just washing the area well with warm water, and then drying it very well. Make sure that Palomo isn't chewing at it, and if he is get him a cone. A mild skin irritation will clear up with just lack of moisture and a bit of time. If it is getting worse it will likely need antibiotics, which you cannot get over the counter. Good luck with him!

This looks like a mild infection which is likely an extension of chin acne. This is usually treated with benzoyl peroxide wipes (i.e. Stridex pads) and oral antibiotics. Antihistamines are also often used to help resolve this and some pets requrire steroid thereapy to get this to subside. This is usually caused by a skin allergy which can be from something in then environment or a food allergy. For relief of the itching / discomfort, you can use a product called Sentry Hydrocortisone spray which can be found at Petco. I also like using Pramosoothe spray, which can be found online. These products can be applied 2-3 times per day to help with the relief. I would try and find out why Rocco is so prone to the allergies though to help with the overall problem rather than masking the symptoms of the problem. If this is a year round issue, he may have a disease called Atopic Dermatitis, which can be treated but can be difficult and expensive to manage. I would also recommend Welactin Omega 3 fish oil capsules. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction.
