What's this on my dog's chin? Is it acne? How can I treat it?

Poor Raven. You did well by changing the bowls because it's believed that plastic bowls can cause an allergic reaction in some pets. Really the only way to treat this is with medication to flush the follicles and then treating the secondary bacterial infections. Topical creams or wipes that contain Benzoyl peroxide (Stridex pads) have been used with some success. And then you will need to visit your vet to get a short course of antibiotics prescribed. This looks like chin acne. This can be from allergies causing the irritation and secondary infection. If you are using a plastic dish for meals switching from a plastic feeding bowl to ceramic or metal can help. I recommend wiping her chin off after eating and you can use an human acne pad like Stridex to clean the area. If those thing don’t help a course of oral antibiotics should clear this up. Hi and thanks for your request. This looks like chin acne, a deep bacterial infection quite commonly seen in these cases. Please provide some disinfection with hibiscrub solution twice daily 1:10 diluted with water and use a buster collar to avoid any scratching/rubbing. If no improvement is seen in a week time a check up will be required as antibiotics may be needed.

Dog acne is best treated with Benzoyl peroxide type products (i.e Stridex pads). Your vet should also have some veterinary product that is specifically for pets and highly effective. Also you will need to likely go with a short course of antibiotics to get things to calm down first. Most dog acne's has a bacterial component which is why antibiotics are needed along with the topical. Chin acne can also be caused by a food allergy. Hypoallergenic diets should be considered here such as Royal Canin hypoallergenic hydrolyzed protein, Royal Canin selected protein Potato and Duck, or Purina limited ingredient just to name a few. This is commonly seen when they get a skin infection. The chin is a common place for this to happen, because there can be excessive moisture that gets trapped here. I recommend cleaning the chin with a medicated wipe or shampoo (can get this at the pet store) once a day until the bump(s) are gone. If it seems to get worse, then you'll want to take Oakley into the vet for an exam, because it may be another skin condition, or need stronger medication.
