How to train a young dog to be a diabetic alert dog at home?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | unspayed | 2 months and 19 days old

I am a type 1 diabetic. I want to at least try to train Sophie, on my own, to be a diabetic alert dog. She shows great intelligence and I think it would be beneficial to both of us if she were a diabetic alert dog. Being a diabetic can be tough, especially when you get low. It can also be dangerous. I don’t have the money to take her to a trainer. So, what are some basic, beneficial, and good ways to begin training Sophie? I think starting her at at a young age would be best.

I would follow this link ( http://diabeticalertdoguniversity.com/ ). You will likely have to pay for a membership but I have sent several clients here before and they seemed to like the easy to follow videos and the cost of the training videos is not bad and very reasonable.
