What food and supplements does my 10-week-old toy poodle need?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Any of the following brands can be fed so long as it is puppy food for small dogs. The food needs to be slowly transition over 7-10 days introducing the new food in about 20% increment every other day. For detail, contact your veterinarian on how to transition the food. Recommended brands are Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina Pro Plan, and Iams. Choose one, and stick with it until about one year of age. After that, transition to an adult formula for small breeds from the same brand. Void feeding anything other than the dogs food and a few treats made specifically for dogs. Hopes this helps!

Congratulations on your new puppy! At first, I would recommend feeding Lola what she has already been eating at the breeder. Changes in diet have to be done gradually to avoid GI upset, so typically continuing to feed the food they were already on helps to make the transition to the new home easier. In terms of treats, she will be very small, so training treats (small bite sized pieces) would be a great option. Toys are variable depending on which type she enjoys. I would get a couple options and see which type she prefers; just remember not to leave her unsupervised with any toys that have a squeaker, as she may be able to chew it open and eat the squeaker! At first, she won't need to have her teeth brushed, as her adult teeth won't have come in yet (she will still have baby teeth). Getting her used to having your fingers in her mouth and manipulating under her gums will help prepare her for tooth brushing when she is a little older. Congratulations and enjoy!

Great question! Kenji needs a puppy formulated food until he is 12 months old, which is when he can be switched to an adult food. This is because puppies require higher amounts of protein, calories, and calcium than adult dogs, and a puppy formulated food will provide that for him. Great question! Puppies should not need supplements as long as they are on a quality, balanced food. I am not sure what foods are available in Ghana, but I like Royal Canin, Purina One, Iams, or Science Diet/Hills. These diets are tested and their ingredients have the balanced vitamins and minerals Fierce needs. Make sure you are feeding a Large Breed Puppy formula until she is about 1 year of age. The bag will tell you how much to feed daily based on her age and weight. If you are training with treats, make sure she is still getting her recommended about of dog food and not too many treats. She does not need milk supplement at that age. I would continue to feed the puppy food she is used to for several weeks. When she’s settled in you can then switch her if you prefer another food. Personally I use Purina dog foods. I start with puppy, go to adult when grown, senior food when old, and the special foods as needed if she develops a medical problem that using a special diet will help. It is not recommended to give vitamins and supplements to a puppy. Lilo should only be getting a puppy formulated dog food, which will provide her with all the supplements and vitamins she needs to grow properly. Giving her too many can cause toxicity as well as adversely affect her growth. I hope this helps!
