What do I need for my new 10-week-old puppy: food, toys, and care?

At the very least, she will likely need to be dewormed. Vaccines can start around 6 weeks of age and will continue every 4 weeks until about 16 weeks of age. Discuss monthly parasite prevention with your vet to protect against worms, fleas, ticks and heartworm. Feed a good quality puppy food. Look for brands such as Canidae, Acana or Merrick. You can feed according tot the directions on the bag, just know that each puppy is different and you may need to adjust the amount if Coqueta is gaining too much weight or not enough weight. Avoid store or discount brands as these may contain low quality ingredients and more fillers. Puppies typically need to go about about 20-30 minutes after eating, sleeping or playing. Expect accidents, they are going to happen. Since dogs thrive on routine, start a consistent schedule for potty breaks; first thing in the morning, midday, evening and before bedtime to begin with. Hi there! Congratulations on your new puppy, Genisis. I would first start by having Genisis in to have a vet visit. This way, the veterinarian can make sure Genisis appears healthy, doesn't have any heart murmurs, or other abnormalities that need monitoring. Puppies can start with their distemper vaccine at about 8 weeks, which also includes an inoculation for parvovirus, which is a very dangerous and contagious gastrointestinal virus that puppies can acquire. Depending on the recommendations for the number of boosters in your area, your vet will let you know how many of these vaccines Genisis will need until being able to be safely let out into the environment to walk around outside and socialize with other dogs. Until he is fully vaccinated, I'd definitely keep him inside, and away from other animals, especially those with unknown vaccine histories. Your veterinarian will also recommend de-wormings and a fecal test at some point to make sure that your new puppy is parasite free. All puppies will have roundworms, and these worms can be transmissible to people, so I always recommend using good sanitary practices - ie wash hands after handling feces, and avoid kisses on the mouth and face. There is also the bordetella vaccine for kennel cough, and the canine influenza vaccine for the influenza virus. I will usually recommend those in my area. What isn't very prevalent in my area, is the leptospirosis bacteria, but I think in Arkansas it can be an issue, so I'd definitely ask the vet about that. Aside from that, I recommend a small breed puppy food for the first year of life - nutro, nature's recipe, royal canin, science diet, or purina are great brands. And I would also have Genisis neutered around 6 months of age to avoid health issues later in life, like an enlarged prostate. Young puppies are not as destructive as older puppies and adult dogs. You may want to try a variety of products to see what this dog will like best. Kongs, puzzle toys and Nylabones are a good variety. You just want to make sure that pieces cannot be bit off of any toy. Nylabones can be hard on the teeth if the dog chews too aggressively. As far as treats, start with peices of the dog's regular kibble. There will be a lot of stress with moving to a new home. Additional diet changes can lead to diarrhea. I hope this information helps!

Coming to new home is stressful for a puppy. This combined with a diet cha he can cause diarrhea. Once she has had a few days to settle in, you can gradually transition her to a new diet. You will want to take at least 7 days of mixing the old and new diets. Make the transition gradual for her. I do not recommend feeding a grain free diet. They are very trendy, but there is new research that they may be linked to heart disease. You will want a puppy food from large company that is able to employ veterinary nutritionists on staff and do feeding trials for their diets on live dogs. Purina ProPlan, Royal Canin and Hills are all good choices. I hope this information helps!

Hello. Cali should be eating a puppy food on her own, either a moistened dry or canned. At thus age, she should be screened by your veterinarian for intestinal parasites & receive appropriate treatment/medications. Vaccinations start at 8 weeks of age. Puppies require higher amounts of protein, calories, and calcium than adult dogs, and a puppy formulated food will provide that for her. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. Once she is 12 months old, she can be transitioned to an adult dog food. As for her breed, unfortunately without seeing a picture of her, I can't say what breed I think she might be. I do recommend a check up with the vet to discuss vaccines, deworming treatments, flea treatments, and spaying her. While there, the vet can help you identify her breed.
