Can a Thundershirt stop my dog from peeing when anxious or excited?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is commonly known as noise phobia. Actually one of my own dogs suffers from this so I will also tell you based on my experience. These types of behaviors can be modified with the help of dog behaviorists who specialize in these types of conditions. These specialists are hard to find as there are not many in the country. In my case, the thunder shirt helped my dog to the point that she acts pretty much normal with it on. There are medications like Trazodone that can help reduce anxiety. This is something that you can obtain from your veterinarian and is likely going to help reduce the anxiety caused by the thunder. Good luck and have a great day!

Some dogs respond to the thundershirt better than others, but in general, it does work very well at easing tension and anxiety in most dogs who wear the wrap. If Riley's anxiety is very pronounced during fireworks, you may want to talk to his veterinarian about anti-anxiety medications that can be prescribed. Calming chewables that have L-Theanine in them can also help as well at easing tension. I have linked an example of the calming chewables below. I hope this helps!

I do recommend a thundershirt and a pheromone collar for dogs with this issue; they may help. they may not, but it is always worth a shot! I also would recommend working with some re-focusing exercises while on a walk. Typically a "watch me" command works well in these situations (there are various teaching videos available on YouTube). If it is persistent, it may be that Max may need an anti-anxiety medication to help with this issue, which would be a conversation to have with your regular veterinarian. Good luck!

I'm so sorry that you are having this problem with Houston. Anxiety can be difficult to control and require both anti-anxiety prescription medication as well as behavior modification training. I would recommend scheduling a consultation with your veterinarian to discuss your medication options. Your veterinarian may also need to do some blood work before starting medication. The best thing to help with this is trying to avoid the trigger (such as calling her name on a high pitch voice or getting vocally excited to see her, act). The increased urination you describe could be due to a urinary tract infection, urinary stones, metabolic condition, a tumor, among other possibilities. I agree with you that if this is something relatively new, it may be due to a medical reason. I recommend that you have Opie evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. George is very lucky that you rescued him. There are a lot of options for anxiety and stress in dogs. It can vary from prescription medications to herbal supplements to wraps to decrease anxiety.
