My anxious dog pees inside. Can medication help with dog anxiety?

George is very lucky that you rescued him. There are a lot of options for anxiety and stress in dogs. It can vary from prescription medications to herbal supplements to wraps to decrease anxiety. I would talk with your vet about starting your dog on a medication for separation anxiety. This will help his and your quality of life. I would also recommend buying a crate and keeping your dog on it while you are gone. This will keep him safe and keep your partners things from getting ruined as well. I hope this helps. I personally have a dog on anxiety medication and it has been a life saver. Hopefully you can find something to give BamBam similar results.

The increased urination you describe could be due to a urinary tract infection, urinary stones, metabolic condition, a tumor, among other possibilities. I agree with you that if this is something relatively new, it may be due to a medical reason. I recommend that you have Opie evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hello. I would start with an over the counter anxiety product like Zylkene. I would also start using a dog appeasing pheromone in the home ( room diffuser ) or it comes as a collar. The pheromone can calm an anxious dog without drugs. Adaptil is the name of this product. If this does not help over the course of a couple of weeks, you will need to talk to your vet about possible behavior modification therapy & the use of prescription medications like Trazodone. Peeing in the house, barking excessively, soft stool and drinking a lot could all be caused by stress/anxiety, for which non -prescription VetriScience daily Composure chews (available on chewy.com) may help, however a consult with your veterinarian re: Prozac (which takes 3 weeks to take effect) or an alternate anti-depressant /anti-anxiety medication or the help of a trainer may be needed. It would be safest however to schedule an appointment with your veterinarian for an exam, full screening bloodwork, a urinalysis and fecal exam to rule out parasites as the cause of the soft stool or renal disease/diabetes as the cause of the increased drinking. Your vet can also prescribe/send home metronidale which is an anti-inflammatory antibiotic to resolve the diarrhea +/- probiotics to help with the soft stool. Good luck!

Poor Freeman! You can get a pheromone diffuser called DAP that helps dogs with anxiety and pair that will a DAP pheromone collar that releases pheromones when in contact with his skin. If those do not help him, then I recommend having him seen by a vet to discuss the use of anti-anxiety medications. Best of luck.

This is consistent with severe separation anxiety and will need some medical help. Talk with your vet about anti-anxiety medication which can help tremendously. (There are many different kinds.) Even with that, you will probably have to do some training and counter-conditioning. Work with a trainer or behaviorist if needed. Crate training helps some dogs with separation anxiety but can actually make some dogs worse so consider that if you’d like to try. Please note that training is very likely to fail without the medication. Eventually, you may be able to wean off of the medication but some dogs need something long-term.
