It is best to use the flush solution first to remove debris and previous medication from the ear canal first (triz ultra) before applying the motazol. Squeeze a small amount of flush in to the ear gently, massage the base, and then allow your pet to shake his head. Gently wipe out any debris/solution with cotton balls that was dislodged. Yeast and bacteria can only be seen under the microscope, which is why the vet didn't see any when looking at Niko's ears using the otoscope. I would follow the vet's instructions in treating his ear infection, the amount is prescribed precisely for treating this infection successfully even if you think it seems excessive. You can use cornstarch to get it out. Use a paper towel to remove as much of the medication as possible from Niko's fur, and then sprinkle the cornstarch over the area avoiding his ear canal. Use your fingers to rub the cornstarch into the fur to absorb the oil, and then brush the cornstarch out with a soft bristle brush.

You can even clean the ear every day, but ALWAYS apply the drops half an hour to one hour after you apply the cleaning solution, otherwise you will dilute the medication reducing its effectiveness. Remember to dry up the ear after applying the cleaning solution.

I would recommend not just an ear wash but also medications to clear up this infection. If there is moderate-severe or 2+ yeast and cocci then I would recommend Oticetic flush and Mometamax ear medicine. You can also try Zymox ear medicine as an alternative. You typically can only get these through your vet or with veterinary approval. Ear medicine and medicated cleaners are typically not sold over the counter. Most ear ointments are a little oily or thick in order to stay in contact with the skin inside the ear canal as long as possible, so it is absolutely normal to feel the ointment in the ear later on. I usually recommend a cleaning solution along with ointment, and you can ask your vet if there is a cleaning solution that they recommend to use to clear out the remaining ointment before applying the next dose. I also would get an E-collar (or "cone") for Norman to prevent him from scratching his ear so that he doesn't cause any additional trauma. You should definitely continue to ointment to continue treating the infection, stopping could make the infection worse and more difficult to treat in the future.

I'm sorry to hear you are having difficulty applying the ear medication - I understand this can be a challenging task! Ear infections themselves can be frustrating too. For my own dog, I find it helpful to stand over him with his head between my legs, that way I can gently use my legs to hold his body in place while one hand holds his head/ear and the other applies the ear medication. I then gently massage the base of the ear to allow the medication to contact all surfaces of the ear canal. It is certainly OK if Storm shakes his head immediately afterwards and a little medication comes out. Additionally, if you do not already have one at home, I STRONGLY recommend purchasing an Elizabethan collar (cone) for Storm, to prevent him from being able to itch his ears. Dogs can create a significant amount of trauma to their own ears and skin from scratching incessantly, and a cone will prevent him from getting to his ears while the infection heals. You are right that there are different causes of ear infections, typically yeast and bacteria (there are many types). Ear medications prescribed are based on which of these is the problem. It is also important for their ear drum to be assessed prior to starting medications. As well, some dogs need oral medications in addition to topical if the infection is severe. Being so young is also a consideration with certain drugs. The best plan is to have your vet perform an ear cytology and assess for an intact ear drum prior to picking the best medication that is safe for Nola.
