My 8-month puppy eats cat food. How do I switch to dog food?

You should transition Oliver to cat food as soon as you can. Dog food is not an appropriate diet for a cat's system. Restrict access to dog food and feed a good quality kitten food. Choose one with a named protein source of animal origin. Serve it warm or mix in a teaspoon of baby food to stimulate his appetite. You can then transition hinm to an adult cat food when he reaches 1 year of age.

Yes that is perfectly ok. They are both balanced dog foods. Just check the bag to see how many calories per cup so you can adjust as needed (meaning if more calories in the puppy food you will have to feed a little more adult food or vice versa). Hi Diana! At 4 months of age, Joey is still very much a puppy. I generally recommend feeding a good quality puppy food, such as Science Diet, Royal Canin, or Purina ProPlan (here are some examples: http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=29265 http://www.drsfostersmith.com/product/prod_display.cfm?pcatid=31148 ) for the first year of life. When Joey turns 1, you can transition him to an adult dog food. Any time you change his diet - even if it is just to a different protein source of the same brand - be sure to do so gradually over 5-7 days. Sudden diet changes can lead to vomiting and diarrhea for some dogs. I hope this helps and that all goes well!

A ten month old dog should be eating a diet formulated for growth, aka a puppy diet, until they are at least 12 months old. The top dog food brands that we recommend are Hills, Purina, and Royal Canin. But, any dog food that is NOT grain free, or vegetarian or vegan, should be healthy for your dog. Great question! I personally do not like raw diets. There is absolutely no proof that they are good for dogs, and pose a health risk to both the dog and owner. They are often not nutritionally balanced either. I think it's great you want to feed Dexter a dry dog food, and I recommend that! A dry food diet is much healthier for him, and will be nutritionally balanced. He will need a puppy formulated food, as puppies need higher amounts of protein, calories, and calcium than adult dogs. Brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science Diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. Good luck, I hope this helps!

Great question! Because Ohu is a small breed dog, I would recommend feeding him the Hill's Small Paws adult food. It's an excellent food for small breed dogs like Ohu. I do recommend slowly transitioning from his puppy food to his new adult food to avoid stomach upset. To do this, feed him 75% old food, 25% new food for three to four days, then give him 50% old, 50% new. Again feed this mixture for three to four days, then feed him 25% old food, 75% new food. After feeding him this mixture for another three to four days, give him 100% of the new food. If he does have any stomach upset during this time, such as diarrhea, increase the amount of old food and decrease the amount of new food until the diarrhea is resolved, then continue to increase the amount of new food. However, it is important to continue her on puppy food for at least another 2-3 months. This will let her grow appropriately as needed.
