Why would someone suddenly get a dog allergy after years with a pet?

While I'm sure it is possible for a dog to be allergic to another dog (perhaps saliva or dander), I think perhaps the more likely scenario is Grizzly may have developed an allergy to something over time. Dogs, like humans, can develop allergies to a variety of substances- food, environmental allergens (like pollen, mold, dust) and many others. Often times, allergies to become apparent as the dog ages and can get worse over time. You may want to take Grizzly into your local veterinarian to have a few allergy tests run to determine what it is he is allergic to. That way, you will know for sure. Dogs do get allergies, however they tend to express them more as dermatology issues than respiratory issues. If your dog continues to have these issues I would consider seeing your local veterinarian. It could be a change in environment (altitude, etc) that is affecting you pet, or it could be something more serious.

Vaccine reactions usually occur within 24-48 hours after the injections so they are unlikely to be related at this point. A lot of allergies are from the environment such as grass, dust, pollens...things you can't control. However a respiratory infection can also cause these problems. An exam by your vet can distinguish between the two. You can always give an over the counter antihistamine such as Benadryl for allergies.

It's possible that your dog and brothers could both be suffering from a contact allergy of some kind. However, dogs can get a number of skin problems that are contagious to humans such as scabies or ringworm, so this is a possibility as well. I would recommend taking your dog to the vet for an exam as soon as possible - he/she can do some simple skin tests to check for these problems, which will help to guide treatment for him as well as your brothers if a contagious disease is found.

This is most likely a sudden allergic reaction to something and should resolve within 12-24hours. If he becomes distressed or uncomfortable, contact your vet for medications to help - they may also prescribe antihistamines to have at home should it happen again also!

This is probably an allergic reaction due to an insect bite or a plant outside. those reactions tend to resolve within 48 hours without treatment. if the swelling becomes too large or if your dog is lethargic, take her to the vet in order to get an antihistamine injection.

My this is certainly an interesting question- I don't believe I have ever been directly asked this question before, but I can offer some insights for you. In general, dogs to salivate frequently and in some breeds they can salivate more than others- Boxers included! In humans that are sensitive to dog saliva, it can cause an allergic response in these people. There are specific proteins in dog saliva that may induce an allergic reaction in sensitive people. Symptoms (like burning sensitive, itchiness, redness, etc) should appear within mins after Chase licks you or other people. It is possible you have an allergy to dog saliva and your perhaps some of your friends or family. This isn't uncommon. I would talk to your MD about the possibility of an allergy you have to Chase's saliva. A skin or blood test with your MD may help confirm this allergy.
