Can my dog be allergic to our new dog? He's never had allergies.

My this is certainly an interesting question- I don't believe I have ever been directly asked this question before, but I can offer some insights for you. In general, dogs to salivate frequently and in some breeds they can salivate more than others- Boxers included! In humans that are sensitive to dog saliva, it can cause an allergic response in these people. There are specific proteins in dog saliva that may induce an allergic reaction in sensitive people. Symptoms (like burning sensitive, itchiness, redness, etc) should appear within mins after Chase licks you or other people. It is possible you have an allergy to dog saliva and your perhaps some of your friends or family. This isn't uncommon. I would talk to your MD about the possibility of an allergy you have to Chase's saliva. A skin or blood test with your MD may help confirm this allergy. If your stepmother wants to be around Teddy, she could consider talking about medication or immunosensitization injections with her physician.

There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Yes he could have allergies since you recently moved, especially if it is hot and humid there. There are lots of bacteria, molds and inhalant allergies that can cause the symptoms you describe. Generally most dogs will adjust to the new environment over several months and not need treatment. If Duke gets worse with the itching or starts more gagging or coughing then I would bring him in for a exam.
