What to do if a stray dog bites a person? Rabies shots needed?

Oh no, your poor puppy! I would clean the bite with warm water and antiseptic soap. He will need to see a vet as soon as possible because the bite can become infected and he likely needs antibiotics to prevent that. As for his vaccine, the vet may hold off while he's on antibiotics but that after, Russo should be able to get his vaccines. I would report to the vet that he was bitten by a stray, and Russo may need to be quarantined to make sure he doesn't have rabies (rabies are passed through bites). I would err on the side of caution. As Rabies is quite prominent in India and you do not know what the Rabies vaccine status of the dog that bit this dog or the dog that was bitten is, I would avoid trying to catch the dog. If you have a animal care and control in India, I would contact them and let them know that there is an injured dog where you live or see if there is a rescue that can help. Hello. If Bella received a proper vaccination from her veterinarian, then there is no need to worry at all about your sister getting rabies. If the vaccine was not properly administered by a licensed veterinarian, the Bella might be able to be quarantined as required by your local municipality. Here in the US, an unvaccinated dog is quarantined at a holding facility ( often a veterinary facility ) for 10 days. If no symptoms, then no need to worry. There is a usually a 10 day quarantine period after an animal breaks the skin of a person. If the animal has rabies in it's saliva - it show signs of rabies within 10 days. This doesn't not mean that the animal doesn't have rabies- just that it couldn't have transmitted it at the time of the bite. Rabies can have a long incubation period. Rabies should be taken very seriously because it is a fatal virus. I would recommend getting Tofy vaccinated as soon as possible. I would recommend consulting with a local veterinarian on what happened and have an exam done on Tofy. They can give you the necessary information. Please don't pet stray dogs. You don't know their vaccination history and if the dog has rabies you could die without getting proper treatment.......That being said, the chance of you getting rabies from what I see in the photos is pretty much zero. It is transferred by bites (saliva) that break the skin. You really should be consulting with a human doctor. We are not human doctors. Please, just don't pet animals with unknown rabies vaccination history.

Since he has had his rabies vaccination, you do not need to be worried. You do not need ARV. You do, however, need to be worried that you could get a skin infection. Just keep the wounds clean as it looks like you have done. If you notice any major redness, pain or swelling around the bite areas you need to see your human doctor.

Rabies is always a possibility if there are sick dogs in your area, or other wildlife that carry it. There is a rabies vaccine available for people, however if you are caring for the animals, watching for signs of illness and bringing them into a vet for care right away is best as well as seeking care immediately if you are ever bitten. If you are able to capture the animals, getting them vaccinated can also help prevent the spread of illness from them to you and to other animals. You can also continue to feed any strays by setting out food without interacting or petting them, and then making sure to thoroughly clean any dishes used in between uses. Seeing if there is a local animal shelter or rescue in your area that you can volunteer for can also help you care for the animals in a safer, more structured manner.
