My puppy keeps jumping on my older dog. How do I stop this behavior?

Puppies at this age can be very determined! I would encourage you to have some time when the older dog is separated from the puppy to give her a rest. I would also encourage you to keep the puppy on a leash (supervised) when around the other dog so you can recall and redirect his attention when needed. Also having a squirt bottle available to squirt his face when annoying the other dog Can be helpful. The More consistent you are on correction the more quickly he will learn not to annoy her. That is normal puppy behavior. All you can do is keep them separated. You are not going to be able to stop the puppy from doing normal puppy things. I suggest you crate train the puppy and take turns letting him out to run around and crating him. When he is out running around put the older dogs outside (if you have a yard) or in another room so they can get some peace. I would recommend using a spray bottle filled with water and spray Zhuri in the face whenever this behavior occurs and say "off!". This is a typical behavior in puppies, especially boxer puppies from what I have seen in my experience. With cases like these, I recommend keeping a collar with a leash attached to him at all times so that you can pick up the leash and correct this behavior right away. If he starts to jump up you then grab the leash and give a firm tug downward and in a stern voice say "off!". If this does not work alone, you can also incorporate a spray bottle filled with water and also lightly spritz him in the face with the water bottle while at the same time tugging on his leash in a downward direction and say "off!". You need to let him know that you are in control of him at all times and by establishing this, he should listen more. I would also reward him with treats when he listens to you so that you can reinforce the good behavior. I hope this helps! If this behavior is undesired, I would look into using a spray bottle filled with water and spritzing him in the face while saying "off!" at the same time. I would also consider using an empty can filled with coins and then tossing it on the floor so it makes a loud noise to startle him so that he stops the behavior. Your worry is very valid! It is best to make sure the two are only playing together when you can directly supervise them and that puppy and your older dog are separated when you are away so that an accident can't happen - even the most well intentioned of a dog can cause an injury! If the puppy starts playing too rough, a "time out" of a few minutes for everyone to calm down can also help and teaches your puppy that too rough of play is frowned upon. Diverting with treats and toys is also a great way, so keep that up.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to here that Loki is doing this. He is young and probably very active so addressing this is important. For one, never encourage him to jump up on you or family. Some people do this thinking it's cute but bigger dogs can hurt kids and elderly people. One thing that worked for me in the past for a variety of problems is an aluminum can filled with some coins and taped shut so the coins can't fly out. Keep the can handy and shake the can or throw it near the dog when an unwanted behavior occurs such as jumping up. The sound alone is enough for some dogs and it gets their attention. Lots of dogs are afraid of the sound and they immediately stop what they are doing. The trouble with it is having the can handy in your hand when you suspect bad behavior that you want to stop. I used to keep them near the front door to prevent the unwanted jumping up behavior. Worked great for me and you can verbally reward and use food rewards when they obey that intervention with the can. It's worth trying. Good luck with Loki.
