How to stop my large dog from jumping on elderly people and guests?

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 50 lbs

We are going to my grandparents house for Christmas this year and Loki is travelling with us over there on a boat. I was just wondering the best way to teach loki to stop jumping up on people that he meets as my grandparents are not stable on their feet and so is my disabled aunt. I would hate for him to hurt them as he is 25kg!!! He jumps on me when I get home and anyone else who hasn't seen him in a while. How do I stop this?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Sorry to here that Loki is doing this. He is young and probably very active so addressing this is important. For one, never encourage him to jump up on you or family. Some people do this thinking it's cute but bigger dogs can hurt kids and elderly people. One thing that worked for me in the past for a variety of problems is an aluminum can filled with some coins and taped shut so the coins can't fly out. Keep the can handy and shake the can or throw it near the dog when an unwanted behavior occurs such as jumping up. The sound alone is enough for some dogs and it gets their attention. Lots of dogs are afraid of the sound and they immediately stop what they are doing. The trouble with it is having the can handy in your hand when you suspect bad behavior that you want to stop. I used to keep them near the front door to prevent the unwanted jumping up behavior. Worked great for me and you can verbally reward and use food rewards when they obey that intervention with the can. It's worth trying. Good luck with Loki.

I would recommend a couple of things to help break this habit. First, when you walk in the house, completely ignore Chevy, turn your back to him, don’t look at him in the eye or even correct his behavior, because although it is negative attention, he still wants any type of attention he can get from you. I would also recommend getting a harness that has pressure points over the shoulders as these help prevent jumping up. Any time he jumps up on you lift your leg in the air so that his chest hits your knee. This will be uncomfortable for him and will discourage him from jumping. You should also start working with him on basic commands such as sit/stay/come. Once he has mastered these it should be easier to use commands when he is excitable. I hope this helps. I strongly recommend taking Ziggy to professional training if he is too big for you to handle. Jumping up to the point where he is injured people is unacceptable and is only gonna get worse as he gets older. There are harnesses available to help prevent dogs from jumping, but these need to be used in conjunction with the training. Basic obedience training is going to be the foundation to work on any other problems. Ziggy should know sit stay and heal and be willing to listen to those commands even when excited. Many times your veterinarian is a good resource for a referral to a trainer or veterinary behaviorist. How to stop my dog from lunging and jumping at people passing by?

Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! You should start with one on one training and NO walks until he is trained. Hire a trainer. Use positive reinforcement and train him to "sit, "heal" on a leash, "look," and "leave it." Also get him used to the gentle leader harness that goes on the muzzle, this allows for amazing head control. Once he is used to the harness and is able to listen to you at home, practice outside on a leash. When people approach ask him to "look" at you and sit. When he does this and ignores the person passing by he gets a treat and verbal praise. You can do this with people you know first. How can I stop my dog from barking at windows and jumping on guests?

I would recommend using a spray bottle filled with water and every time Woody barks, spray him in the face and say "off!". I would also recommend using a citronella collar, which can help deter Woody from barking. Jumping on people I would use the same technique with the spray bottle and even something loud such as an empty can filled with coins that you can shake loudly at Woody to stop the behavior. When he jumps up, you grab the leash and give a firm tug downward and say "off" to deter this behavior. My 4-month-old puppy jumps and nips. How do I stop this behavior?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It sounds like Hobbes has a lot of boxer in him! This is a typical behavior in puppies, especially boxer puppies from what I have seen in my experience. With cases like these, I recommend keeping a collar with a leash attached to him at all times so that you can pick up the leash and correct this behavior right away. If he starts to jump up you then grab the leash and give a firm tug downward and in a stern voice say "off!". If this does not work alone, you can also incorporate a spray bottle filled with water and also lightly spritz him in the face with the water bottle while at the same time tugging on his leash in a downward direction and say "off!". You need to let him know that you are in control of him at all times and by establishing this, he should listen more. I would also reward him with treats when he listens to you so that you can reinforce the good behavior. I hope this helps!
