My puppy chases my cats. How can I stop him from hurting them?

How do I stop my 9-10 week old puppy from chasing my two cats? They both run away, and one swats back at him but he's getting bigger and is soon going to be able to actually hurt them. We never leave them alone together, as he's crated when we can't watch him, but he's so fast it's hard to stop.

I would recommend keeping Jasper on-leash in the house for now, so that you can keep him from being able to chase the cats - as long as he is able to continue doing this, the problem will get worse since cat-chasing is a very self-rewarding behavior for most dogs :) Praise and reward him with treats for staying calm when the cats are around. The cats will also start to become braver around him once they realize he can't chase them, which means that they won't run as much - this will also help.

Over time, once he's no longer trying to chase the cats when he sees them, you can begin giving him more off-leash time in the house.

Until you are absolutely convinced Kenny isn't going to purposefully or accidentally injure your kitties, I would either keep him leashed in the house at all times or completely separate the cats from the dogs. This is not just for the kitties protection but for Kenny's as well; he's liable to get whacked across the face by one of the cats sooner than later if he continues to give chase. In terms of how best to control the situation, positive reinforcement training like you have described is going to be your best option and often takes a ton of repetition and practice before understanding what is being asked. Kenny is still a very young dog with his brain in development. He is being bombarded constantly with new stimuli and exciting things like kitties running around. The best thing you can do for him is to continue to desensitize him in a controlled fashion and reward him for the behaviors of which you approve. While I realize it is tempting, do not punish him or yell at him as it is almost always universally counterproductive. Hope this helps.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Chasing behavior can be normal, especially in certain breeds of dogs. It is important for your cat to have a safe space to escape to; I typically recommend a baby gate at the base of a stairwell (if possible) to allow the cat to jump over to escape to an upstairs level when he needs to escape. It is something that may improve with time, or it may not. When Cash starts chasing the cat, I would recommend distracting him with a different game or toy to redirect his energy and focus his attention in a different direction. This will take some time because Koda is a puppy and he thinks he is playing. Keep him on a leash in the house at all times until the chasing/rough play phase is over. You may also want to read a few books about dog training. Training training and again training is the answer to your question!! Start with simple commands everyday, for 10-15 minutes. Yes rough play can be definitively dangerous for your cat (or for Jack!!) and I would monitor them very closely or even try to keep them separated until Jack is not disciplined enough.. For now, I would recommend keeping Marge on-leash whenever the dogs are together - this way, you can prevent her from chasing him, and can also reward her for remaining calm when he is around. When you aren't able to do this, it would be best to keep them separated to prevent any problems. As Marge gets older, this problem should improves as she settles down a bit. If these suggestions don't help and there is no improvement in the situation in the next week or so, I would recommend getting in touch with a good reward-based trainer who can work with you in person to help address this issue. My Jack Russell Terrier chases cats. How to introduce them safely?

Jack Russell terriers do love chasing things! But with training, many can live harmoniously with cats. I would work on solid basic obedience with soekie first- So she reliably responds to basic commands like sit, down and wait. And I d exercise her away from the cats a lot! Then when you introduce her to the cats do it at a time when soekie has burned a lot of energy prior, out playing/running/ fetching etc. keep soekie on a leash so the cats are safe and give soekie commands like sit or down when the cats are close so she re focuses her attention to what your asking her rather than being too focused on cats. When she listens to you give her lots of treats and positive reinforcement. When she is able to focus well on you and relax in presence of cats you can try this same thing with her leash on but just dragging behind her- so you can grab it if neccessary to keep cats safe. Also reward her when she relaxes her body language around the cats. Do short sessions and end while things are still going well. Hope this is a good starting place for you. Always gently correct him as soon as he starts any inappropriate play by distracting him with a toy & always reward him with praise or a treat as soon as he turns his attention from your feet.
