How to stop my 9-week husky puppy from biting and hating her crate?

Pet's info: Dog | Siberian Husky | Female | unspayed | 2 months old | 8 lbs

How can I stop my husky from biting me? I was thinking about training her at petco. She also hates her crate with a passion. The only thing she knows how to do is poop and pee outside. I give her treats everytime she goes potty outside. Shes 9 weeks. I need help!!

Puppies learn to explore with their mouth. Luckily she is young and can be trained with patience and consistency. First, make sure you have lots of treats handy. Second, have lots of toys handy. When you are playing with Luna and she starts to bite you, make a high pitched squeal. When she stops biting, tell her good girl and give her a treat or toy. When she chews on the toy, tell her shes a good girl. She will get the hang of it.

For the crate, you need to get her used to it slowly. When you are home, feed her in there without closing the door. Put treats and toys in there so she can come and go when she likes. Slowly build up to closing the door for short periods. Give treats when shes calm inside the crate. At night, put something in there that smells like you. Be tough, don't crack before she does.

At this age, it's completely normal for Luna to bite anything she can reach - just like a toddler who wants to grab and touch everything :) This means that you need to puppy proof your home to make sure she doesn't have access to anything she shouldn't have.

Put your things away where she can't reach them, and confine her to a crate or a dog-proofed room whenever you're not home or if you're too busy to supervise her. Make sure that you are also providing lots of appropriate things for her to play with and chew on, to help her avoid the temptation of chewing on other things - different types of toys, as well as chew items like rawhide chews, bully sticks, cow or pig ears, etc. You can use Bitter Apple spray on furniture or carpeting to help deter her from chewing on these things if needed.

As she gets older, her natural drive to chew on everything will decrease on its own. Most dogs are no longer chewing on inappropriate objects by the time they are 2-3 years old, but she will need lots of supervision until then to make sure she doesn't have a chance to form bad habits.

You can work on training her to 'settle' in a certain area like a bed, and then work on having her go to that place for short periods of time while you are in the other room. The best thing you can do for her is to take her to obedience classes. It will help with her socialization as well as getting her to listen to you. You can also hire a trainer to help you work with her. Proper training is super important at this age so that bad behavior does not become a permanent habit as an adult. Also making sure she has plenty of exercise is important. Going for regular walks, dog parks, and even agility centers are great! Just make sure she stays as cool as possible with the summer heat!

How to stop my 6-month Husky puppy's destructive separation anxiety?

Siberians can be quite "active" if left alone for long periods. Are you by any chance scolding Luna when you find the mess? If so, that can set up a situation where she thinks that she is going to be reprimanded every time you come home, which leads to anxiety while you are away, which leads to more mess-making! It is useless, and even counterproductive, to correct a dog for a behavior that occurred even five minutes ago. She just won't make the connection, even if you "show her," etc. Try leaving her a big Kong toy stuffed with peanut butter (make the night before and freeze) to occupy her. You may need to resort to a crate, because if she deoes something naughty and is not IMMEDIATELY corrected, she will not understand that it's wrong to do it. I’m sorry to hear about Luna Mia! There are many thoughts and opinions about dog training. One thing is sure- you need to nip this in the bud IMMEDIATELY. My rules include: if she bites during play time all play ends immediately. If she bites, she is reprimanded immediately and put in another room. Crate training can help a lot with anxiety so start crate training if you haven’t already. Help! My 5-week-old husky puppy bites painfully. What can I do?

I would recommend purchasing Sophia Yin's book 7 Days to the Perfect Puppy as a resource for puppy training. For these situations, it is recommended when your puppy nips that you give a loud sharp piercing "ouch" yelp as another puppy would make, and then stand up and leave your puppy, thereby removing the rewarding interaction with you. After a few minutes, return and give your puppy an appropriate chew toy. Repeat this interaction whenever your pup is biting you. Reward your puppy when you see her chewing on appropriate toys with praise and treats. If you are unable to make a yelp noise appropriately, you can instead try her "standing like a tree" method, where you immediately stand up like a frozen tree/statue without looking at or interacting with your pup. Ignore him until he stops moving or sits and then give him several treats to reward him for not chewing on you! My husky puppy bites my hands during play. How can I stop her?

Having had Siberians for over 40 years, I can attest to the fact that they can be pretty determined when it comes to doing what they want. That is not to say, however, that they are untrainable. I would suggest that you stop two of your interventions right away. All dogs live in the present. They can't guess the future, nor can they remember the past. So a time out is absolutely worthless as a training tool. Further, offering a toy when a dog is misbehaving is actually offering a reward! Also, you need to be very judicious with hand-feeding, or she may dome to expect to be fed that way, and you'll have to break her of the habit. Is my 8-month Husky scratching her dog crate due to anxiety?
