How to stop my 6-month Husky puppy's destructive separation anxiety?

Any time a dog exhibits a behavior for which he is rewarded, he is likely to repeat it. If he does something and is corrected (never punished!!!) fir it AS IT IS HAPPENING ONLY, he is unlikely to repeat it. But if he goes wild at night when no one is around and he is not scolded, there is no reason for him to think that there is anything wrong with what he's doing and he will do it again. Reprimanding him after-the-fact is counterproductive, as he will not make the connection and this will only cause him to be anxious and act out more. Your best bet is to put hi in a crate for the night. He may howl and carry on, but you must ignore this (assuming that his bathroom needs, etc. have been met). After a few nights of not getting any attention at all from you when he makes a racket, he will stop and settle down in his crate. The only other option is for you to stay up at night so you can catch him at it and correct him right away. Siberians are very active, and this is not unusual (though it is extreme).

Yes, dogs can have relapses in their anxiety. If you found a way to manage it before, I would recommend trying again for a few weeks. If any additional medical symptoms arise, I would recommend having Luna checked out by the vet.

It could be that Oakley is suffering from separation anxiety, causing him to bark when he's alone. I recommend crating him when you are gone. The crate will provide him a small space where he can feel safe in it when you are gone. You will have to slowly train him to get used to a crate. Start putting him in it when you are home and sitting nearby so he doesn't think you are abandoning him, and slowly increase the time he is in it. He can have toys in the crate, and puzzle toys with treats in it that he has to figure out how to get the treats out. You can put a tablespoon of peanut butter in a Kong toy and freeze it in the freezer overnight, then give it to him in the crate. That will keep him occupied for a while. Finally, you can get a pheromone diffuser called DAP that helps dogs with anxiety and pair that will a DAP pheromone collar that releases pheromones when in contact with his skin. If these methods do not help him, then I recommend having him seen by a vet to discuss the use of anti-anxiety medications. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

This is sometimes made worse in a kennel, though for many dogs the kennel makes it better. I recommend talking to your veterinarian about anti-anxiety medication for him. I notice he is 25 lbs so I’m assuming he is not yet full grown. For a puppy, one of the most important things you can do for anxiety and decreasing destruction is exercise and training. A husky puppy needs about 1-2 HOURS of hard play or running per day. Spending 10-15 minutes per day on training (tricks, etc) also prevents boredom, tires them out, and decreases destructive behavior. Best wishes to you and Shesh.

I would recommend providing him with plenty of toys including the kong toy that allows you to insert peanut butter or small treats so that he has to really work to get the treat. Adaptil priducta, which can be found online, can also help. If you are unable to correct this behavior, I would try NaturVet quiet moments calm chews with Melatonin which can be found online or at your local pet store. If there is still no improvement after trying these, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate treatment can be recommended such as anti anxiety medicatioms. Puppies learn to explore with their mouth. Luckily she is young and can be trained with patience and consistency. First, make sure you have lots of treats handy. Second, have lots of toys handy. When you are playing with Luna and she starts to bite you, make a high pitched squeal. When she stops biting, tell her good girl and give her a treat or toy. When she chews on the toy, tell her shes a good girl. She will get the hang of it. For the crate, you need to get her used to it slowly. When you are home, feed her in there without closing the door. Put treats and toys in there so she can come and go when she likes. Slowly build up to closing the door for short periods. Give treats when shes calm inside the crate. At night, put something in there that smells like you. Be tough, don't crack before she does. Basic training at PetCo is a great idea! Good luck and congrats on your new baby. Sending kisses!
