How to stop a new puppy from barking and howling when alone at night?

I see that Rhea is still very young, only about 6 months old. I'm also not sure from your description if she is barking because she needs to go out and potty, or because she is anxious and lonely in her kennel. If she is needing to potty this often at night, I would be concerned that she may have a medical problem such as a UTI causing this - in that case, it would be best to take her to the vet to have this checked. If she doesn't need to potty but is just restless and upset in her kennel, I would first make sure that her kennel is in your bedroom - right next to your bed, if possible. It's not natural for puppies to be all alone at night, so many pups will cry if they are isolated in a separate room from their owners. Normally, moving her so that she is nearby resolves the problem - you can talk softly to her to reassure her if she wakes up and gets scared during the night.

Poor Koko! The most common reason that puppies tend to cry at night, is when they are separated from their families - this often happens if they are crated in a different part of the house at night. Dogs are very social animals, and young puppies in particular would normally never be alone when they are sleeping - so they will often bark and cry if they are separated from you. I would recommend having Koko sleep in a comfy dog crate, right beside your bed. If needed, you can even place the crate on a low table or chair so that she is at eye-level with you - this way, she is in her own separate space but she can hear you and smell you beside her. This is also a good arrangement because it allows you to hear her if she cries to go out during the night - many puppies this age can't "hold it" for more than a few hours at a time, so nighttime potty trips are often needed for a while. Once she is older and sleeping through the night with no problem, you can gradually start to move the crate further away from the bed, or even eventually into another room if you prefer.

Young puppies do not have separation anxiety because they are too young. This is more often related to not wanting to be separated from their 'pack'. Arctic breeds can be very pack oriented. It is a good idea to teach puppies to be comfortable with separation. I recommend to read many books about dog training. There is one trainer named Victoria Stilwell who I think has good methods. Stick with positive re-enforcement. Make sure to stick to a routine, give DouDou plenty of exercise and don't enforce the behavior by letting the puppy out of the crate when she is crying. Begin with crating her for very short periods of time. Gradually increase that time as she acclimates. This will take time and requires patience and consistency. Offer a special toy or treat as a distraction. Praise and reward her as she acclimates. A pheromone product, such as the Adaptil collar or DAP plug in diffuser, may help to decrease anxiety. This same method can be used to acclimate her to your absence. Additionally, you can prepare to leave several times daily then put everything away and stay or actually leave. Upon your return, ignore Lily Belle for 15 minutes or until she is calm. Do not make a big deal about coming or going. Consider a pet day care program or having a dog walker visit during the day. At her age, she should not be crated for more than 5 hours before being let out to relieve herself. This time can increase as she matures. The general rule is 1 hour of crate time per month of age plus an additional hour.

I would try putting Co co in a crate at night. Keep in mind she's quite young, and it will take time for her to adjust to being in a new home away from her mother and siblings. It's truly like having a newborn baby in the home! But the good news is that puppies will get better at sleeping at night faster than babies. If she is in a crate, cover the crate with a sheet. You can also leave a night light on as well as a radio tuned to a talk radio station. These items may provide "company" for Lily. Make sure she has had her walk to eliminate before bedtime.
