My dog jumps on tables and couches. How can I stop him safely?

You have a few different options to help keep this behavior from happening. You could give Pilot a special chew treat, such as a bully stick or a Kong stuffed with peanut butter, to keep him busy while you're eating. You could also use a baby gate to block him out of the dining room while you're eating, or put him in his crate if he is crate-trained. If you want a training solution for this problem, you can teach him to lay quietly on a designated mat or dog bed during dinner time - to do this, you would need to reward him very frequently at first for staying on his mat, so that this is more rewarding for him than trying to jump on the table while you're eating. Over time, you will be able to reward him less and less frequently, until eventually he can stay quietly on his mat during the entire meal for a single reward at the end.

Training dogs to stay off furniture is very difficult. Dogs are situational learners and he thinks that he can get on the furniture when you are not watching. The positive response in his brain happens every time he gets on the couch and since he does it when you're not looking, it reinforces it's self. You either need to block access to the room with a baby gate, put something like chairs on the couch or they do make an electric collar with a small disc that you place under the couch and set a radius. If Bow comes within the radius, he will get a zap and thus not approach the coach. It all depends on how you wish to approach the situation. I hope this helps to point you in the right direction. Hi, this can be difficult at first but since she is so young she should catch on fast. She should be crated when not supervised and when supervised, you need to remove her immediately when she looks like she is about to jump. You can also attach a leach to her and around your waist so she is always with you and unable to jump on things. Say "off" in a firm voice if she tried to jump, then reward her with a treat when she goes by the table and does not jump. it may take some time but be consistent and she will get it as she grows older. Hello, silly Chloe! She now knows that there is food on the table. When eating, I would distract her with an extra activity and maybe remove her from the dining room to keep her from getting into food or developing a begging behavior. Its really hard to resist delicious pizza, but begging behavior in dogs takes time and patience to control. You may feed her at the same time in a separate room as well. Ive found, that removing them from the environment that elicits unwanted behavior works best. Hope this helps.

Some dogs experiment around this age and if you continue to correct him when he jumps on the counter he may 'grow out of it'. Other dogs are just too tempted by food on counters and tables and will continue to counter surf. Unfortunately it can be a hard habit to break since you rarely catch them in the act. The best way to prevent this behavior is to make sure no food is left unattended on the counters or to prevent Koda's access to areas where food is unattended.

To keep your puppy as safe as possible start training him now to learn that he shouldn’t jump up on things. It is also very important that you keep your dog and an appropriate weight. The more overweight the more prone they are to have issues with their joints, including their spines. It may also help to get small stairs or ottomans that he can climb onto to get onto the furniture so he won’t have to jump as far. This is not unusual and it is VERY important to NEVER give him anything from the table or this will encourage the behavior. It will be easiest to train Papu to go to his crate when it's time for you to eat and leave him there until dinner is over.
